"Maxxing" has been named the word of 2026 The announcement was made by Dictionary.com, which every year draws up a ranking of the latest linguistic trends

Dictionary.com has announced that "maxxing" is the word of the year for 2026, as it represents the linguistic and cultural trend of optimizing every aspect of one's life. In 2026, Dictionary.com explains, online searches related to maxxing increased significantly.

What it means

The term maxxing derives from English words such as maximum, maximize, and maxing, used to indicate reaching a limit or making the most of a resource. Its evolution is also tied to video game terminology, particularly the expression min-maxing, a strategy that involves maximizing a character's best attributes while accepting their weaknesses. The term later spread on Reddit and other online forums, taking on a form with two "x"s and becoming the basis for numerous new words.

Among the first expressions to gain popularity is looksmaxxing, which refers to the attempt to improve one's physical appearance through habits, workouts, or cosmetic procedures. The term was already circulating around 2015, while in subsequent years other variants emerged, such as moneymaxxing, related to optimizing one's finances; statusmaxxing, concerning the improvement of one's social status; and surgerymaxxing, associated with cosmetic surgery. By the end of 2025, these expressions had begun reaching a wider audience, attracting media attention largely through the success of influencers and content creators such as Clavicular and members of the problematic manosphere community.

Can the suffix really be applied to anything?

Alongside more serious terms, such as those relating to beauty and health, ironic expressions have also emerged, like cozymaxxing, which describes the pleasure of spending time at home in total relaxation. Another notable example is tokenmaxxing, referring to the intensive use of artificial intelligence in the workplace, encouraged by tech companies that incentivize employees to make the most of these tools. There is also nonnamaxxing, which involves improving one's life by adopting habits traditionally associated with Italian grandmothers.

One significant development concerns the standalone use of the word maxxing. It is no longer used solely as a suffix for other terms, but also as an independent verb to describe any attempt at personal improvement.

The manosphere and beyond

Initially associated primarily with young men and online manosphere communities, the phenomenon has begun to encompass areas such as beauty, fitness, wellness, and work. The term can express a genuine aspiration for self-improvement, but also an ironic critique of the social pressure to constantly optimize every aspect of one's existence. According to Dictionary.com, maxxing reflects a contemporary culture obsessed with efficiency, performance, and the idea of always getting more — even as the word also allows for a questioning of this very mindset.

The other words of 2026

After announcing maxxing as word of the year, Dictionary.com also presented the other words that had been in the running for the title: affordability, relating to the ability to access goods and services economically; data center, which has become central to the debate around artificial intelligence and energy consumption; Odyssey, which returned to the spotlight thanks to cinema; and unc, a Gen Z slang term used to describe someone as out of touch or uncool.
