Chanel chooses Rome for its next Métiers d’Art show After New York, Matthieu Blazy prepares to take over the Italian capital
Last December, Matthieu Blazy made a definitive statement with his first Métiers d’Art collection, a vibrant ode to the exceptional savoir-faire of ateliers such as Lesage, Montex, and Lemarié. Staged in the depths of the New York City subway, the show served as a cinematic tribute to American culture. Between silhouettes channeling Frank Sinatra and nods to Superman, Blazy also made house history by casting Bhavitha Mandava as the first Indian model to open a show for the house of the camellia.
While Matthieu Blazy is dusting off Chanel’s image with high-profile "it-bags" and trending ambassadors, he remains deeply mindful of the historical heritage of Rue Cambon. By selecting Rome for the next Métiers d’Art chapter, the designer follows a dual lineage: that of Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld.
The announcement, accompanied by a photograph of the founder alongside filmmaker Luchino Visconti, recalls that "Coco" first discovered Italy in the 1920s—a country that became a lifelong source of inspiration. In 2015, it was Karl Lagerfeld’s turn to take over the Cinecittà studios for a show that remains legendary. For Blazy himself, this return to Italy feels like a homecoming; the former Creative Director of Bottega Veneta forged much of his creative identity and his passion for craftsmanship in the neighboring peninsula.
