A Guide to All Creative Directors The first digital encyclopedia dedicated to fashion creative directors

Creative directors come and go. The past year has been a whirlwind of departures and new appointments in the fashion world: even the longest-standing and most iconic partnerships – such as John Galliano at Maison Margiela or Pierpaolo Piccioli at Valentino – have been shaken by a carousel of changes that shows no signs of slowing down. With press releases arriving in quick succession, it has become increasingly difficult to keep up with the baton-passing at major fashion houses, which barely leave time to catch a breath before announcing their next creative director. Consider the chaos of mid-December: within ten minutes, news broke that Matthieu Blazy would be stepping down from Bottega Veneta, followed by reports that Louise Trotter – who had resigned from Carven that very morning – would take his place, and finally, that Blazy himself would be moving to Chanel after weeks of speculation over who would succeed Virginie Viard. In short, it’s no easy task to remember who is leading what; this need has inspired the first digital encyclopedia entirely dedicated to creative directors: “A Guide to All Creative Directors: the history of fashion through its most influential figures”, presented by nss magazine.

The project catalogs over 150 brands and more than 300 creative directors, covering a timeline from 1837 to 2025. Its analysis reveals fascinating data: first and foremost, a cultural diversity comprising 38 different nationalities among the creative directors leading major fashion houses. Italians top the list, accounting for 27% of the names, followed by the French at 19%, and the British at 11%. “A Guide to All Creative Directors” is designed for dual navigation: vertically in alphabetical order and horizontally in chronological order, from the most recent creative director to the most historic one. With a responsive search bar, users can explore the timeline of brands and their creative directors. A key feature is the “switch” icon, which allows users to discover all the brands a specific designer has worked for. Additionally, each entry redirects users to dedicated profiles of both the brands and the creative directors, complete with news and in-depth insights.
