The sequel to "Freaky Friday" is truly Even Crazier Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis return in full force to their roles from the 2003 film

We always raise an eyebrow when we hear about sequels. Especially when it comes to works from a not-so-recent past, unrelated to superhero franchises, and when true cult classics—often generational—are being revisited. 2025 is full of them. Fresh from the requel I Know What You Did, flooded by on-set photos of The Devil Wears Prada 2 (which, frankly, is spoiling all the surprise looks from Andy and her boss Miranda Presley), August brings the continuation of the iconic Freaky Friday with Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis in the brand-new version Even Crazier. Fans are nervous, and the stakes are high. Many might rightly see the 2003 film as just another quirky generational title. And from a certain point of view, that’s understandable, although it’s undeniable that the film was a beacon for the childhood and adolescence of tomorrow’s audience.

After all, lightheartedness was always the hallmark of the film directed by Mark Waters, which followed the tradition of the Freaky Friday franchise (the original name), a series of films beginning with the first adaptation in 1976, all inspired by the 1972 children's book by Mary Rodgers. The formula remains the same in every film: characters switch bodies, and that happens again here. Only this time, compared to the 2003 game, there are more characters and thus more chances to wake up in someone else’s skin. Lohan and Curtis will end up in the bodies of young Julia Butters, playing the daughter of what was then teen Anna, and Sophia Hammons, daughter of the protagonist’s love interest played by Manny Jacinto.

There will be plenty of jokes and sketches about the difference of being in a body that can still bend without knees cracking, or with a metabolism that allows for guilt-free dairy. Of course, like in the first film, in Freaky Friday: Even Crazier the main premise of the swap is to walk in someone else’s shoes—to understand what they feel, how they live, what conflicts they face, and to get to know and empathize with them. But just like the 2003 film—and maybe even more so, considering its cult status (including a $160.8 million global box office)—it’s the joy that the characters and their actors radiate that strikes the audience like a wave of energy.

Even more unrestrained, knowing it’s playing with a winning hand—though not relying on laziness—Freaky Friday takes its subtitle, Even Crazier, seriously. You can tell from the performances by Lohan and Curtis, the latter’s wild energy, and the chemistry that genuinely feels like a decade-long bond with her cinematic goddaughter. It’s hilarious to see the final girl from Halloween throw herself into tight outfits and absurd gags, not holding back the joy that clearly spread across the set and now reaches the audience. The film had a tough test to pass—and it did so with flying colors. The real question now is the box office, since the first film was a hit (compared to its budget), but it was the Disney Channel generation that made it timeless. If you want to unwind and cool off in the AC this summer, Freaky Friday: Even Crazier is a winning choice—and, fortunately, also one of the most fun.
