Wylie Welling is reinventing Carhartt garments A new era for upcycling

It is born Wylie Welling, the new brand founded by Gretchen R. Valade, which redefines the meaning of upcycling through the lenses of heritage, savoir-faire and longevity. Conceived for those who wish to own not an object, but a fragment of history, Wylie Welling speaks to contemporary wanderers, those drawn to narratives capable of withstanding the passage of time. At the core of the brand lies a radical belief: wear is not a flaw, but an added value.
Wylie Welling celebrates a deep interest in the lived, the repaired and the wonderfully imperfect. Each piece is conceived or selected not as a finished object, but as a living narrative, destined to evolve alongside its wearer. Wearing Wylie Welling means stepping into a story in progress: a silent collaboration with the past, where craftsmanship and time intertwine.
Rooted in the iconic aesthetic of American workwear, the brand reinterprets original Carhartt garments: functional archetypes, emblems of durability and sartorial rigor are not replicated, but reworked. Wylie Welling operates through subtraction and stratification, allowing the history already inscribed in each garment to inform its next chapter. The inaugural collection features unique, unisex pieces sourced from the Carhartt archive, dating from the 1970s to the early 2000s. Each element is upcycled and reworked between Los Angeles and Detroit, giving new life to the archive through a contemporary lens
«Wylie Welling stems from my long-standing interest in circularity, craftsmanship and longevity» says founder Gretchen R. Valade, great-great-granddaughter of Hamilton Carhartt. «Through the reinterpretation and restoration of original Carhartt garments, I aim to continue celebrating the beauty of making, enhancing the history and legacy embedded in every product».
Wylie Welling challenges the conventional notion of preservation as immobility. Instead, it embraces continuity. Garments are designed to move across hands, bodies and different lives, gaining value and identity over time. Every thread carries the weight of memory, while remaining open to reinvention. The brand’s philosophy is articulated around three pillars: heritage over novelty, selecting garments that transcend trends and activate a generational dialogue.
Craftsmanship as narrative, honoring techniques that respect material, maker and time. Evolution as luxury, celebrating repair, wear and transformation as distinctive marks. Wylie Welling emerges in a cultural moment in which consumption is charged with new responsibilities and meanings, proposing an alternative to disposable fashion: a system where garments are not simply purchased, but lived; not archived, but continued.
The official launch takes place today, April 7, followed by the opening of a physical space in East Detroit, scheduled for the summer. More than a store, the space is conceived as a relational hub: a place of transmission, where workshops dedicated to repair, craftsmanship and sustainable practices redefine the value of making.
