Cannes Films Land in Paris Exclusive catch-up screenings to discover the hidden gems of the Croisette
As the curtain just fell on the 79th Cannes Film Festival, Paris-based cinephiles who couldn't make it to the South of France are getting a swift catch-up session. The MK2 and UGC cinema networks are offering exclusive previews of a wide selection of films straight from the Croisette. A perfect opportunity to escape the current heatwave and take refuge in the coolness of a dark theater.
Cannes Review: Between Historic Triumph and Mixed Reviews
The Cannes Fortnight concluded with the crowning of Cristian Mungiu. The Romanian filmmaker joins the highly exclusive club of two-time Palme d'Or winners with his film Fjord, nineteen years after his first triumph in 2007 for 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.
This accolade closes a festival with a contrasting track record, deemed "uneven" by critics, marked by an inconsistent competition and several missed opportunities. For the general public, the wait will be long: most of the featured feature films will not hit theaters officially until the end of the year, or even 2027. Fortunately, after the excitement of the red carpet and the opening weekend traditionally handled by Gaumont-Pathé cinemas, the capital is stepping up to keep the magic alive.
MK2 Bibliothèque: Check Out the Lineup!
The MK2 group is taking center stage this week by screening 25 films from the various Cannes selections. The festivities are in full swing over at MK2 Bibliothèque (BnF). The event actually kicked off on Monday with a screening of Garance, a drama laced with humor, starring Adèle Exarchopoulos as a woman battling alcoholism.
The lineup kicks off with a packed schedule this Tuesday, May 26, starting at 7:00 PM with a screening of A Few Days in Nagi, featuring an in-person appearance by Japanese director Kôji Fukada. This will be followed at 9:15 PM by the evening's main event: the presentation of Cristian Mungiu’s Palme d'Or winner, Fjord. The event continues on Wednesday, May 27, at 8:00 PM with Paweł Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, before making way on Thursday, May 28, at the same time for Notre Salut, directed by Emmanuel Marre. Finally, this Cannes showcase will wrap up on Friday, May 29, at 7:00 PM with a screening of Charline Bourgeois-Tacquet’s A Woman's Life.
Cinema Fights Back Against Bolloré's Ambitions
Over at UGC, the Cannes atmosphere also played out behind the scenes. Throughout the festival, Canal+ commercials were systematically booed by audiences in the theaters. This sent a strong signal from the film community against Vincent Bolloré’s takeover ambitions. Following his grip on the premium cable channel, the UGC cinema network now appears to be in the billionaire's crosshairs for a future acquisition.
Despite these political tensions, the celebration of cinema goes on: UGC is organizing its own "reprise" of the Official Selection and the Un Certain Regard section, running from May 27 to June 2.
