21 Queer Films on the Cannes Film Festival Radar This Year A record since the creation of the Queer Palm in 2010
Just one week before the opening of the Cannes fortnight (May 12), the Queer Palm jury has unveiled an unprecedented selection. With 21 films in the running, this 16th edition marks an absolute record since the prize was created in 2010 by journalist Franck Finance-Madureira.
Drawn from both the Official Selection and parallel sections (Un Certain Regard, Critics' Week, Directors' Fortnight), these 21 works are competing for two major awards: the feature film prize and the short film prize. These films explore LGBT+ and feminist perspectives, demonstrating a narrative richness that goes beyond simple advocacy to embrace all cinematic genres.
The composition of the jury reflects the growing importance of this award within the cinematic landscape. The presidency is held by a prestigious duo: director Thomas Jolly, the mastermind behind the Paris Olympic ceremonies, and actress Anna Mouglalis. Alongside them is model and activist Raya Martigny, bringing sharp expertise on issues of representation and identity.
This significant increase in films addressing queer issues highlights a major evolution within the world's largest film festival. More than just a trend, this massive selection marks a true normalization of themes related to sexual and gender diversity. By integrating naturally into the heart of the Cannes competition, these stories finally offer stable and authentic visibility to the populations concerned, transforming the perspective of both audiences and the industry as a whole.
