Zara has announced a two-year partnership with John Galliano The designer will rework the brand's archival pieces
After two years of hiatus following his departure from Maison Margiela, internationally renowned designer John Galliano returns to the scene with an unprecedented project, no longer tied to luxury but to retail: a two-year creative collaboration with Zara, based on the concept of re-authoring, meaning the reinterpretation of the brand’s archives. Instead of creating entirely new collections, Galliano will work with existing materials. The project aims to combine creativity and sustainability, redefining the parameters that shape the idea of fashion, as well as the difference between high and fast fashion.
The collaboration stems from a friendship between Galliano and Marta Ortega Perez, chair of the Inditex group, who has helped foster an open dialogue between artistic vision and business strategy in Zara’s new projects. After two years away from the fashion system, Galliano appears to have found the right balance to continue expressing his creativity, supported by a Spanish fast fashion giant that has managed to completely reposition itself within the fashion industry precisely through collaborations like this.
The new collections designed by Galliano will be genderless and seasonless. The focus shifts to silhouettes and proportions, as the designer explained, rather than trends. The debut of the first Galliano x Zara collection is scheduled for September 2026, a key moment to understand how this collaboration will merge the iconic nature of the designer’s work with large-scale production. In any case, it marks the beginning of a new chapter, not only for the designer and the Spanish brand, but for the entire fashion system, which after this news may reconsider its priorities.
