John Galliano will be the star of the next Met Gala 2027 Is Fashion ready to forgive and forget?

The wait is over: the theme of the next Met Gala 2027 has just been made public, with John Galliano taking center stage through the exhibition John Galliano: Horizons. A truly singular event, not only because of the figure of one of fashion's most brilliant and influential designers, who rewrote the contemporary language of the industry through his celebrated creative directorship at Dior from 1996 to 2011, but also because of the controversies that continue to surround his name.

It was in 2011, in fact, that a series of antisemitic remarks led Galliano to step down from the helm of the maison. In recent years, the Met Gala has become far more than the most anticipated fashion event of the year, in terms of prestige, media relevance, and cultural dimension, it has become one of the epicenters of contemporary controversy. One need only think of last year's edition, Fashion Is Art, which sparked debate partly due to the presence of major tech figures such as Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez, raising no small amount of concern among industry insiders and the general public alike. But the public wants spectacle, and when it comes to John Galliano and the Met, it's hard to expect anything less.

The Controversial Galliano Retrospective

The next edition of the Met Gala will also be one of the most culturally sensitive in recent memory. Making a monumental retrospective dedicated to Galliano possible required the establishment of a genuine roundtable bringing together Anna Wintour, global editorial director of Vogue and Met trustee, Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, Galliano himself, and some of the most influential rabbis and representatives of New York's Jewish community.

The goal was to proactively address the potential sensitivities surrounding an exhibition dedicated to the designer, and to gather observations and perspectives before the official announcement. An almost unprecedented moment, one that demonstrates how fashion can no longer afford to sidestep cultural and ethical dialogue when it chooses to celebrate a figure as complex as this one.

There is yet another element that makes this exhibition historic: Galliano will be only the third living designer to receive a monographic exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, following Yves Saint Laurent and Rei Kawakubo — the highest honor the Costume Institute can bestow upon a designer.

Forgetting or Reckoning?

On view from May 9, 2027 to January 9, 2028 in the Met's galleries, the exhibition will bring together garments, accessories, and archival materials, tracing the way Galliano transformed historical, artistic, and cultural references into collections that redefined the language of fashion. The show will draw largely from the Costume Institute's collection, which holds the largest body of the designer's work in the world. The exhibition is curated by Andrew Bolton, who has structured the journey around three sections: Bearings will reconstruct Galliano's career chronologically, placing it within its historical context and openly addressing the rupture of 2010–2011. Horizons will explore his universe of references, showing how images, cultures, and disciplines from across the spectrum fed his creative imagination. Finally, Atlas of Transformation will guide visitors through the creative process via research notebooks, sketches, toiles, and finished garments, illuminating the process behind each collection.

The exhibition will trace Galliano's entire career, from the graduation collection he presented in 1984 at Central Saint Martins through the years of his eponymous label, his tenures at Givenchy, Dior, and Maison Margiela, up to the acclaimed Haute Couture SS24, widely regarded as one of the high points of his recent output. But the Met does not shy away from the most controversial chapter. The exhibition will also confront the antisemitic, racist, and anti-Asian remarks made between 2010 and 2011, his dismissal from Dior, the conviction handed down by the French courts, and his subsequent path toward rehabilitation.

With John Galliano: Horizons, the Met's galleries will become the arena for its most complex challenge yet: what does it mean today to dedicate the world's most important fashion exhibition to a figure like John Galliano? A celebration of his creative genius, or a new way of confronting the contradictions of fashion and contemporary culture?
