Everything you need to know about the new iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro Apple unveiled the new generation of iPhones last night at Apple Park in Cupertino

Apple has just unveiled what could be one of the most significant iPhone generations in recent years. On one side are the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, an evolution of the traditional Pro lineup; on the other is the iPhone Duo, the company's first ever foldable iPhone. Three devices united by the new A20 Pro chip, iOS 27, and the latest generation of Apple Intelligence, yet built around two very different visions of what a smartphone should be.

iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone

The most obvious newcomer is naturally the iPhone Duo. When folded, it features a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR external display, while unfolded it reveals an internal screen measuring 7.6 inches — the largest ever used on an iPhone. Apple has also worked on the visibility of the crease, with a nanotexture surface designed to reduce reflections and glare. Both screens support ProMotion, always-on mode, and reach up to 3,000 nits of brightness outdoors.

The foldable form factor fundamentally changes the way iOS is used. On the iPhone Duo with iOS 27, Split View makes its debut, allowing users for the first time on iPhone to open two apps simultaneously, place two Safari windows side by side, and save app combinations to reuse later.

iPhone 18 Pro goes all in on the camera

While the iPhone Duo represents a bold hardware experiment, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max remain the models focused primarily on photography, video, and performance. The headline feature is the 48MP Fusion camera with variable aperture, which introduces aperture control to iPhone for the very first time. Six blades allow users to adjust depth of field and light intake, while the new Pro controls enable manual adjustment of aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and exposure.

Also new are Apple Reference Images — unalterable reference images generated from sensor-signed data that allow users to compare the original shot with any edited versions: a feature aimed primarily at professional photography and photojournalism.

A20 Pro and Apple Intelligence unite the new iPhones

Under the hood, both the iPhone Duo and the new iPhone 18 Pro models run on the A20 Pro, built on a 2-nanometer process. The chip integrates a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU, and a dual 16-core Neural Engine designed primarily to handle AI models directly on the device. Apple has also redesigned the thermal system with a new vapor chamber, ensuring sustained performance during gaming, multitasking, and Apple Intelligence operations.

With iOS 27, Apple Intelligence is woven even more deeply into apps: Photos introduces new editing tools and Image Playground can generate photorealistic images, while Safari introduces "Notify Me," a feature capable of detecting changes on a webpage — such as a price drop or availability update.

When do the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro launch?

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available for pre-order from September 12 and on sale from September 18, in black, silver, glacier, and burgundy. The iPhone Duo, available in starlight white and midnight sky, will arrive later: pre-orders open on October 16, with the release date set for October 23.
