Lady Gaga's looks set the Coachella stage alight this weekend Between feathers, bloody crosses and a post-human universe, the pop star keeps on fascinating

This weekend, the main stage of the Coachella festival trembled under the dance steps of one of the most iconic pop stars of her generation: Lady Gaga. While the star made her mark on the music world with iconic tracks like Just Dance, Paparazzi, Alejandro and Telephone, she also impressed audiences with her outrageous looks, including countless pairs of Armadillo by Alexander McQueen and her infamous meat dress, which still sparks questions today. For this weekend's show on the stage of one of the world's most sought-after festivals, which lasted no less than two hours and during which Gaga blessed her fans with her most iconic hits up to the recent Abracadabra, the singer opted for a multitude of outfits ranging from a black slip dress with fishnet stockings to eerie full-white looks, as well as impressive red gowns. Dramatic, sometimes slightly romantic, the outfits worn by Gaga at Coachella helped bring a fantasy universe to the stage, marked by a clear duality: the clash between light and dark, black and white, exactly like Alexander McQueen did, to whom she paid tribute throughout the show.

The singer indeed made a very clear first nod to McQueen, performing Poker Face dressed in a black slip dress, set on a massive 3D chessboard in homage to the SS05 “It’s Only a Game” collection by the British designer, which was originally presented on a similar set with models positioned as chess pieces. This tribute continued through to Paparazzi, which she sang while wearing a white, flowing, ethereal dress that extended from her arms, giving the impression of wings. A look strikingly reminiscent of a key moment from the "Scanners" show, McQueen’s FW03. Later in the evening, the star changed into a black leather bondage-inspired jacket from Dolce & Gabbana FW03, a spectacular red cabaret-style dress that lifted her above the crowd for her performance of Scheiße, a ruby red satin gown designed by Samuel Lewis and Seth Pratt, and a custom look by Dilara Findikoglu while she performed in a sandbox.

And among these ever more spectacular costume changes, we find a French brand that has been making waves in recent months: Matières Fécales. As the French brand shared on social media, Lady Gaga chose to wear a custom outfit created by Matières Fécales specifically for this performance of Bad Romance. The outfit is based on a white bodysuit (as are the rest of the outfit elements), decorated with a bloody red cross seemingly stitched with staples, and imposing shoulder pads. The bodysuit was, of course, not worn alone, but paired with vertical white feathered wings, a skirt also made of white feathers connected by a kind of tulle belt/corset, as well as a tightly fitted jacket at the waist, also white and with large shoulders. Accompanied by a horde of dancers led by the unmatched Parris Goebel, all dressed in white as well, and within a scarlet red set, Lady Gaga and her "feathery thing” took us into the strange and unsettling world of the pop star, in what felt like a lucid dream blending gothic, glamour, and glory.

Matières Fécales is one of the essential emerging brands that made its debut at Paris Fashion Week last month. Behind this memorable name, to say the least, is a visionary duo made up of Hannah Rose Dalton and Steven Raj Bhaskaran, who are unafraid to redefine beauty and grotesque, imposing their avant-garde aesthetic on runways—and now on the most prestigious stages. This Canadian brand’s signature is distinguished by its singular aesthetic blending post-humanism and gothic style, elevated by the use of daring prosthetics. On the runway, the outfits are presented on models with smooth scalps, shaved eyebrows, and dramatic makeup, giving an “alien” effect that borders on unsettling. An aesthetic that perfectly matches the one Gaga has built over the past decade, and that of her fans, whom she calls her "Little Monsters"—a match made for the Coachella stage.
