5 trends from the 2000s that are about to make a comeback this autumn Goodbye Y2K and indie sleaze

Was the return of gladiator sandals this summer down to Nolan's Odyssey or to the comeback of early 2010s fashion? Probably both. What seemed like one of the many consequences of yet another boho chic revival could in fact be part of a much broader movement. Having brought back virtually every Y2K trend and passed through indie sleaze, fashion is moving further along the nostalgia timeline, drawing ever closer to the era of twee, of the hipster, and continuing in the wake of normcore. In short, we've arrived at the late 2000s and early 2010s.

This view is also shared by Karya Schanilec, a New York-based street style photographer and trend forecaster who uses the fashion trend curve to try to anticipate which trends are about to go mainstream. The model follows a trend's lifecycle, from its emergence in niche circles to growing interest, through to brand adoption and mass diffusion. According to Schanilec, several trends typical of the late 2000s and early 2010s are already in stage 2 — early growth — or stage 3 — the marketing period — when interest begins to rise and retailers start to pick up on it. To identify which could be the next big comebacks, Schanilec cross-referenced search trends on Pinterest with what is already appearing in stores.

Here, then, are 5 trends from the early 2010s that we'll be seeing this autumn.

Lace camisoles

Pinterest searches for lace cami and lace cami outfit have grown steadily over the past two years, reaching 100% interest over time. Just look at the new collections from Hollister and Skims: lace camisoles, layered Henleys, and layering looks that seem to come straight from a back-to-school 2009 wardrobe.

Gaucho pants

According to Schanilec, searches for gaucho pants are following the same trajectory. Wide-leg cropped trousers are simply an evolution of the much-loved capri pants that dominated this summer, and they're already available at Urban Outfitters and Brandy Melville — fitting neatly into the new 2000s-inspired activewear aesthetic, with its emphasis on cotton, colour, and relaxed silhouettes over the matching co-ord sets of recent years.

Ponchos

Pinterest is recording similar growth for ponchos and poncho outfits. After the return of suede, fringing, maxi belts, and gladiator sandals, the defining garment of 2000s boho could be the next step in an aesthetic that keeps edging closer to the era of Sienna Miller, the early days of The Row, and the golden years of Phoebe Philo.

The bandage dress

The bandage dress is also climbing in searches. House of CB had already revived the silhouette last year, helping to reignite interest in Hervé Léger. With the post-indie sleaze revival, the return of clubbing culture, and a renewed curiosity around the swag era, the 2009 club-night uniform is making its way back into relevance.

The cropped fur hoodie

On the Hollister website, Schanilec also spotted another icon of those years: cropped jackets with thick waistbands and fur-trimmed hoods. It's an aesthetic that's also making a comeback thanks to Madonna, who with Confessions II has revisited the visual world of Confessions on a Dance Floor and the iconic Gucci jacket by Frida Giannini she wore in 2006.
