April 10th, 2025
Last year, Marina Raphael, founder and CEO of her eponymous label, joined Elie Saab as the artistic and design director of handbags, marking a remarkable collaboration between the legendary Lebanese couturier and the Greek Austrian designer. Since launching her brand in 2018, Raphael has captivated the industry with her impeccable taste, unwavering determination, and a design sensibility deeply rooted in her Swarovski heritage. Her debut collection unveiled at the Haute Couture show this past January, and her FW25 collection showcased in March, did not disappoint. Each handbag, meticulously handcrafted in Italy, exuded confidence and sophistication. The designs seamlessly blended soft nappa leather and rich textures with striking, structured metal hardware. «Collaborating with Elie Saab has been an incredibly enriching and inspiring journey. There’s a profound sense of unity within the house. Mr. Saab himself is truly exceptional—a visionary whose creative brilliance is matched only by his warmth, humility, and generosity. His presence is magnetic, and his ability to lead with both passion and grace leaves a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to work beside him» she explained.
The Greek Austrian designer is dedicated to crafting a distinct and captivating identity for the handbag line—one that embodies both timeless elegance and the unmistakable essence of Elie Saab. As part of this vision, she is exploring the development of signature elements that will serve as iconic hallmarks of the brand. Among these is the sculptural 'wave' motif, inspired by the graceful curve of the letter 'S' in Saab, which captures the sophistication and artistry synonymous with the brand. «Beyond aesthetics, we’re expanding the product range to meet the diverse needs of Elie Saab’s clientele—from day-to-evening bags to travel essentials—all crafted with exceptional quality and precision. The goal is to create a complete universe of leather goods that stands on its own, not simply as an accessory to fashion, but as a central expression of the brand’s identity» she said. As the brand’s atelier is located in the heart of Paris, Raphael has found herself increasingly captivated by the city’s timeless elegance and vibrant modernity. Paris, with its unique blend of heritage and innovation, serves as an endless wellspring of inspiration for her work. Each visit, especially during Fashion Week, offers her new opportunities to explore the city’s charm and uncover hidden gems. Here’s a list of must-visit places from the artistic and design director of handbags at Elie Saab.
«I first visited Paris as a young girl and, like many, was drawn to its iconic landmarks —the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the city’s grand architecture. While all of that was inspiring, it was the fashion that truly caught my attention. » she explained when we asked her when and how was her first visit to Paris. «I was fascinated by the store windows, each one showcasing beautifully designed collections with care and creativity. I also spent time visiting galleries and fashion exhibitions, which spoke to my deep interest in design. But what stayed with me most was the city’s effortless style —from the charming streets to the vintage shops and elegant boutiques. That early experience sparked a real connection to the world of fashion, one that continues to influence me today.» A real connection to the world of fashion, but also to its French capital: «A perfect day in Paris begins with beautiful weather, ideal for exploring the city on foot. I start with a quiet coffee in the cozy lobby of the Hôtel Balzac, followed by a fresh croissant as I head out. My morning continues with a walk to the Elie Saab atelier, where I get together with press and connect with buyers. I truly enjoy engaging with different voices from the industry; those conversations are always energizing» she described. «For lunch, I usually head to L’Avenue for their classic crab salad. The afternoon is reserved for discovering hidden alleys, browsing vintage boutiques, and soaking in the charm of the city. As the day winds down, I meet friends for a drink, usually at a stylish hotel bar. For dinner, I love Hotel Costes—the atmosphere is always vibrant and fun.»
When we asked her about her favourite place to stays in Paris, she answered that «My go-to boutique hotel in Paris is the Hôtel Balzac: a charming and intimate retreat just steps from the Champs-Élysées. It offers a warm, personalized experience, thanks to its exceptionally kind and friendly staff. The rooms are beautifully designed, spacious, and modern, creating a true home away from home. » « I truly value its location; walking to the Elie Saab showroom and other spots is so convenient. It’s a favourite among the fashion community, creating a welcoming sense of connection. I often find myself running into familiar faces in the lobby or the elevator» she adds.
As for the restaurants and bars, three have her heart: Loulou, Gigi and Chakaiseki Akiyoshi. «When dining out, I adore Loulou and Gigi—both are effortlessly stylish. Loulou, located at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, offers an exquisite fusion of Italian cuisine and French elegance. The terrace views of the Louvre gardens alone are worth the visit. Gigi, perched atop Avenue Montaigne, is another gem. With beautiful views of the Eiffel Tower and a glamorous Riviera vibe, it delivers a lively yet intimate dining experience. For something entirely different, when I crave Japanese cuisine, I turn to Chakaiseki Akiyoshi. This understated, authentic restaurant offers a kaiseki journey through the delicate flavours of Japan.» But Paris and his charm is mostly known for its cafés, like Les Deux Magots and Le Consulat, Marina's favourite. «Les Deux Magots, nestled in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, has long been a haven for artists, meanwhile, Le Consulat, in Montmartre, enchants with its postcard-perfect façade and village-like charm» she specified.
When we asked her if there is any exhibition she would suggest for 2025 or a cultural spot like a gallery off the beaten path, she told us that «For those with a deep appreciation for fashion, Fondation Azzedine Alaïa is an essential stop. Created to preserve and celebrate the legacy of one of my all-time favorite designers, the foundation is housed in Alaïa’s former atelier in the heart of Le Marais. It offers temporary exhibitions, curated archives, and cultural programs that honor his timeless contribution to the art of couture. For something more off the beaten path, I always find myself drawn to Tornabuoni Art Gallery. Tucked away from the usual crowds, this refined space specialises in 20th-century Italian avant-garde art. On a recent visit, I was captivated by their display of Valerio Adami’s work—vivid, symbolic, and profoundly intellectual. Tornabuoni is a gem for art lovers looking to go beyond the mainstream and immerse themselves in a deeper, more contemplative aesthetic journey.»
As far as shopping is concerned, she explained that «For timeless high-fashion pieces, Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré is an essential destination. Lined with the ateliers of fashion’s most revered maisons, it embodies the elegance and heritage of Parisian luxury. A recent highlight is the newly opened Alaïa flagship store—a personal favourite. The boutique is a masterclass in modern minimalism; stepping inside feels like entering a serene gallery where every detail celebrates silhouette, precision, and architectural grace. In contrast, Le Marais offers an intimate and eclectic allure. This historic quartier offers an artistic spirit and sense of discovery. From emerging designers to visionary concept stores and some of the city’s most coveted vintage finds, Le Marais is where style feels spontaneous yet intentional—bohemian at heart, but unmistakably chic.»
But in addition to nice shops, beautiful areas, museums, restaurants and café, Paris has much more to offer: «Paris has a poetic charm that’s truly one of a kind. It’s a city that doesn’t just live in the present—it carries its history, art, and elegance in every street and building. Each arrondissement feels like a brushstroke in a beautiful painting, full of character and meaning. Walking through Paris is like stepping into a living museum—every corner has a story, every boulevard blends the past with the present. It’s this unique harmony between heritage and modern life, between grandeur and intimacy, that sets Paris apart. It’s a place that doesn’t just ask to be seen—it invites you to feel it, to be moved by its timeless beauty and effortless sense of style» she nicely concludes.
