Interview with Jonathan Anderson We spoke to the Irish designer about his latest, amazing collaboration and more

"It is the person who wears it who
will make the shoe"

Despite his young age, Jonathan Anderson has managed to amaze and surprise the fashion world. His extraordinary creative ethos, the increasingly thinning of that line between male and female wardrobe in his aesthetic, and his peculiar way of conceiving shape and design made him one of the most appreciated designers in the fashion system in a very short time. And

Jonathan Anderson has never stopped making us dream with his creations.

To testify his inexhaustible ability to surprise is his very recent and already much-chatted collaboration with Converse, GLITTER_GUTTER, that distorts the common perception of male and female through three different Converse’s silhouettes dominated by the surprising and unexpected presence of glitter.
Halfway between pop-art and cultural heritage, halfway between what we thought we wanted and what, instead, we dreamed of in secret, there is GLITTER_GUTTER.

You’ve surprised the public with a collaboration with Converse.
Is this part of your will to 'turn fashion democratic'?

If you design something, it is the person who wears it who will make the shoe. That’s what I get from Converse: when you wear their products, you make them.

Talking about this collaboration: how does it come into being?

We have been willing to work together for a little while. With the SS18 collection presented during Pitti Uomo, it was the right moment to do it!

"Sneakers are totally part of my daily uniform"

What do sneakers represent to you?

Sneakers are totally part of my daily uniform. It's a staple iconic product, as is a pair of Levi's or a Fruit of The Loom jumper.

How does Converse fit into JW Anderson imaginary?

GLITTER_GUTTER wanted to be unexpected. Taking the glitter out of its natural context and wearing it with a pair of washed chino for ex.

Which are your aesthetical source of inspiration?

I’m all about trying to find the grotesque and the ultimate femininity, playing with those ideas to the point where it goes full circle.

Should we be expecting a more 'sporty' approach in your future collections?

Collaborating with other brands is part of the JW Anderson DNA. Partnering with Converse didn’t change us but allowed us to experiment.
