5 getaways one hour from Paris to try out this summer Whether you dream of a mansion by the water or a retreat in the heart of nature
Need to disconnect without going too far? The Paris region is full of hidden gems to discover for a day or a weekend. Forests, picturesque villages, castles, lakes: here is a selection of five destinations easily accessible by train or car from Paris.
1. Giverny
The village of Giverny is inseparable from Claude Monet, who lived there from 1883 to 1926. His house, his famous flower gardens, the water lily pond and the Japanese bridge form a living museum, recreating the paintings of the impressionist master. The Museum of Impressionisms, located nearby, extends this artistic immersion. In spring and summer, the visit becomes a sensory journey through color.
Access from Paris: 45 minutes by train from Saint-Lazare station to Vernon, then shuttle (15 min) or rent a bike to Giverny.
2. Domaine de Courances
Located in the Gâtinais Natural Park, the Domaine de Courances is a jewel of French heritage. Its 17th-century château, flowing moats and French-style gardens offer a peaceful, timeless atmosphere. Less known than other major estates, Courances is still one of the most beautiful landscaped sites in Île-de-France. The château interior can be visited by reservation, but the gardens alone are worth the trip.
Access from Paris: Around 1 hour by car via the A6 or N7
Price: Garden entrance – €11 (full price)
3. Espace Rambouillet
Want greenery and animals in the wild? Espace Rambouillet is a breath of fresh air in the heart of the forest. Deer, roe deer, wild boars... here you walk through their territory in total discretion. Educational trails are designed for families, and the majestic Forest of Eagles amazes young and old with its bird of prey flight displays. A perfect nature getaway close to the capital.
Access from Paris: 34 minutes by TER from Montparnasse station, then shuttle by reservation from Rambouillet station.
4. L’Isle-Adam
Voted the most pleasant city in France in 2019, L’Isle-Adam charms with its riverbank ambiance and peaceful lifestyle. The city center, bordered by the Oise River, looks like a movie set: old-fashioned bakeries, family-run cafés, and vintage-style bookstores. In summer, its river beach delights families looking to swim and relax. A true change of scenery less than an hour from Paris.
Access from Paris: Around 50 minutes by train (line H) from Gare du Nord, stop at L’Isle-Adam – Parmain.
5. Étretat
It’s impossible not to mention Étretat for a seaside escape from Paris. Its famous white chalk cliffs offer a stunning natural show, and its coastal vibe attracts walkers and photography lovers alike. Étretat is especially popular in summer, but remains magical all year round. For an unforgettable hike, take the customs trail overlooking the English Channel.
Access from Paris: Around 2h30 by car via the A13
By train: Paris Saint-Lazare to Bréauté-Beuzeville (2h15), then bus to Étretat (30 min)
