What does it mean that a "Simpsons" writer is running for the US Presidentials? The writer is the well-known screenwriter Dan Greaney, and he appears to be serious about it

Dan Greaney, longtime writer for The Simpsons, recently announced his intention to run in the next United States presidential election. As reported by Wired, the beginning of his electoral campaign took place in Los Angeles, in front of a small group of supporters gathered in a city park. Greaney is not a well-known figure in American politics, but he is familiar to many people for his work as a screenwriter.

Among the episodes of The Simpsons written by Greaney, one has become particularly famous: Bart to the Future, which first aired in the United States on March 19, 2000. In the episode, Greaney and his team imagined the future of the iconic cartoon's characters: while Bart had become broke, Lisa had made it to the White House and was working to rebuild the country after a massive economic crisis caused by an imaginary presidency led by Donald Trump. Speaking about it later, Greaney said that the joke was a sort of «warning for America».

Where Dan Greaney's candidacy comes from

In the months leading up to his announcement, Greaney cultivated his public image by alternating between ironic content on social media and political reflections. In some videos, he presented himself as a kind of modern prophet, complete with a gray beard and wig, to comment on developments in American politics. During the campaign launch, however, the tone was different, Wired notes: no caricatured characters, but a traditional candidate's suit and a serious political message.

The writer openly acknowledged how unusual his candidacy might seem. However, he argues that the country's political situation requires involvement from figures outside traditional political circles. According to Greaney, American democratic institutions are going through a critical phase and are in need of profound renewal.

In the speech announcing his candidacy, Greaney also explained the connection between his professional experience and his new political path. In his view, comedy is not only meant to make people laugh, but can also serve as a tool to highlight problems that are often ignored. Regarding the decision to include an imaginary Trump administration in the Bart to the Future episode of The Simpsons, he said: «It seemed to us like the last logical step before finally hitting rock bottom. We chose it because it fit with the vision of an America that had "lost its mind"

Politically, Greaney describes himself as a progressive Republican, drawing inspiration from presidents such as Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt. His proposals include expanding the Supreme Court, revising the role of the judiciary, and implementing measures to counter potential corruption within public institutions.

Greaney's platform also includes strengthening the healthcare sector, investing in environmental initiatives, and introducing measures to make the housing market more accessible. He also proposes reforming campaign finance laws with the aim of reducing the influence of large corporations on election campaigns — during the presentation of his platform, for example, he promised not to accept funding from political committees backed by major companies.

Although his campaign has only just begun and attendance at the launch event was limited, Greaney appears determined to continue his political journey: he said he plans to launch a podcast dedicated to his candidacy, speaking with experts in the field to better understand the dynamics of politics. For now, it is unclear how much space he will be able to gain in the public debate, but his candidacy is yet another example of how, in the United States, figures from outside politics can leverage their public profile in an attempt to reach the White House — after all, Trump himself followed exactly that path.
