Air Max 95 20th anniversary

Air Max 95 20th anniversary

Two decades have passed since the Air Max 95 debuted. The performance running paradigm shifter, with its distinctive pop of neon yellow, radiated a rare confidence, as if aware of its soon-to-come acclaim. Looking nothing like the products merchandised around it, the shoe demanded immediate attention.

The source of that assurance was Nike footwear designer Sergio Lozano who, thanks to a supportive team, followed through on his vision and created a sneaker with a legacy worth the Air Max family name. One rainy afternoon Lozano found inspiration while taking in the Beaverton scenery. He drew a quick sketch, featuring striations similar to those found on the walls of the Grand Canyon, and stashed it in his idea drawer. Lozano was also attracted to the correlation between the construction of the human body and the essentials of product design. With human ribs, vertebrae, muscles, and skin as his chief points of inspiration the first Air Max 95 prototype was created.

Lozano and his team battled through review after review until the shoe was put into production. His confidence paid off as the shoe soon became synonymous with budding music movements from London to New York, and beyond, whose collective and characteristic brash sounds paralleled the shoes unapologetic aesthetic. Youth culture rallied behind the Air Max 95 and the Air Max franchise blossomed into a style staple.

To mark the twentieth anniversary of the Air Max 95, Nike celebrates with the release of two new models: The Air Max 95 Ultra Jacquard and the Women’s Air Max 95 Ultra

From upper to outsole the Ultra Jacquard is an exercise in refinement: it's a strikingly different yet familiar version of the Air Max 95 updated to fit the needs of an active lifestyle.

The Women's AM 95 Ultra is instead a minimalist approach for women: a "less is more philosophy" for the whole design of the shoe.

The Nike Sportswear Air Max 95 Ultra Jacquard and Women’s Air Max 95 Ultra will be available on nike.com/sportswear as well as select Nike Sportswear retailers beginning Jul. 16.
