The story behind Jaden Smith’s castle hat at the Grammy Awards

The story behind Jaden Smith’s castle hat at the Grammy Awards Quand le mysticisme rencontre la haute couture sur le tapis rouge

Considered one of the most prestigious musical events in the industry, the Grammys Awards made a big impact again this year. The award ceremony took place on Monday, February 3, gathering the cream of the crop of the music scene. From Doechii's inspiring speech to Beyoncé's historic win, the event was full of highlights. Of course, celebrity outfits sparked discussions as they do every year. But in this 67th edition, it was Jaden Smith's attire that drew the most attention. The son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith graced the red carpet wearing a black Louis Vuitton suit paired with classic New Balance sneakers. But what made his outfit go viral was his striking hat. The castle-shaped headpiece he wore was created by the brand Abodi in collaboration with photographer and art director Szilveszter Mako. The piece, named "Vampire Castle," costs a modest €4,500 and is described as a “creation that embodies the essence and origins of the Transylvanian brand.” The artist behind the brand, Dora Abodi, is renowned for her evocations of Transylvanian mysticism in her designs, drawing from local legends and mythology—especially the story of Elisabeth Báthory (nicknamed "the Countess Dracula") and her ties to vampire folklore.

In an Instagram post, the label explained that: “The now-famous ABODI Transylvania Vampire Castle is a symbol of boldness, strength of spirit, and adherence to folklore and legends. It serves as a reminder of childhood and preserves a sense of playfulness and boundless creativity regarding shapes, fabrics, concepts, colors, textures, fashion, and art. Additionally, it fosters creative partnerships and inspires individuals who serve as sources of motivation.” ABODI, as both an artistic and fashion project, has always represented more than just a fashion brand; it’s a designation that carries the family name and a space where like-minded creatives can gather.

Furthermore, it appears that Jaden Smith has mentioned in interviews his fascination with vampires and gothic culture in general, even hinting that he might be one himself. “There was a period in my life when I was gothic. I only wore black and stayed out of the sun because I was a vampire. I was a vampire, for real. Now, I’m no longer a vampire, I’ve moved past that phase,” he reportedly said in an interview with Numéro magazine. However, this isn’t the first time the headpiece has made an appearance. It has been worn by Czech actress and model Eva Herzigova on the cover of Numéro magazine last year, and it evokes a black-and-white shot of actor Willem Dafoe on the cover of GQ’s Man of the Year 2023 issue. Whether the young rapper-actor chose this headpiece to (re)live his vampire persona or simply to keep his ears warm, his accessory certainly didn’t go unnoticed.
