Sex workers are also adapting to AI Some are starting to take advantage of new technologies, while others are focusing on authenticity
In recent years, artificial intelligence systems have also found a place in the adult entertainment sector. For example, dozens of websites specialized in creating custom pornographic content through AI have emerged: the most well-known are Candy, LustLab, and Pornify – all platforms that allow users, depending on the subscription chosen, to define the appearance and characteristics of the imaginary characters starring in the generated scenes or images.

In many cases, however, the content produced does not differ much from what is already available – for free or for a fee – on the main adult entertainment portals. Nevertheless, the rise of AI in the porn industry generates a great deal of concern among sex workers, who perceive artificial intelligence as a form of competition that is difficult to sustain, especially because these tools make it possible to produce content at much lower costs and with great speed. It is therefore not surprising that, as reported by The Economist, an increasing number of performers are requesting the inclusion of contractual clauses to prevent their content from being used in the training of AI models.
How the sector is changing
The growing importance of AI in the porn industry is also evident when looking at the advertisements on major adult content websites: today, in fact, an increasing percentage of ads is taken up by AI-based image generators or customizable erotic chatbots, among other things. Yet, the use of AI in this field brings with it several problems: for example, it contributes to reducing the need for crews, sets, equipment, and in some cases even sex workers themselves, a development that is radically changing the production chain, with significant consequences for industry workers and in terms of the economic spillover generated.
For this reason, some platforms – despite being mainstream – have decided to adopt a more restrictive approach, banning for now content entirely generated by AI in an attempt to differentiate themselves. Faced with a web increasingly driven by algorithms and bots, some adult entertainment platforms – including OnlyFans – aim to strategically position themselves as spaces dedicated to “authentic” materials, thus attracting an audience in search of content perceived as more real.
Pros and cons of AI in the porn industry
Even where fans want to interact with a human, online sex work has become more difficult. In the age of AI, up-close interactions may matter more than ever https://t.co/l40Mkg88vL

But among sex workers there are also those who have decided to adapt and experiment directly with new technologies linked to AI. Some creators, for example, use chatbots to manage conversations with fans, automating an activity that would otherwise require a great deal of time. Others have chosen to license the rights to use their image or voice to artificial intelligence companies, with the aim of creating digital clones and continuing to earn money even after leaving the industry.
These strategies, however, are mainly accessible to sex workers who are already very well-known, with a strong and loyal fan base. For many others, adopting tools based on artificial intelligence appears more risky than advantageous. The fear is that of alienating one’s audience, which often follows and supports these creators precisely because of the sense of authenticity that is difficult to replicate with a system designed to be automated.
