French fashion was the real star of the Grammy Awards

Last night, the annual Grammy Awards ceremony once again gathered the brightest stars of Los Angeles. While the evening's goal was to celebrate the albums, tracks, and labels that made 2024 a memorable soundtrack, Haute Couture also took center stage. Big names in fashion from around the world were, of course, front and center, from divine Italian creations — Roberto Cavalli for Cardi B, Dolce & Gabbana for Alicia Keys, and Prada for Billie Eilish — to Anglo-Saxon masterpieces like Sabrina Carpenter's stunning sky-blue dress by Jonathan Anderson for his eponymous brand. Yet, the ones that truly caught our attention were the French designs. From Schiaparelli to Saint Laurent and Jean Paul Gaultier, here’s a recap of the made-in-France outfits that (almost) stole the Grammys spotlight.

It took less than a week for one of the (almost) looks created by Ludovic de Saint Sernin as a guest designer for Jean Paul Gaultier to make it to one of the world’s most-watched red carpets. Just last Wednesday, the French designer unveiled his army of sexy pirates in the Le Naufrage collection. And yesterday, British singer Charlie XCX walked the Grammy red carpet in a custom version of one of his dresses. With a tightly cinched corset, cascading gray tulle, and doe-like eye makeup, the chosen dress was perfect for the artist, who won not one but three Grammys: "Best Dance/Electronic Album of the Year," "Best Recording Package" with Brat, and "Best Dance-Pop Recording" with Von Dutch.

The second look that captured our hearts and turned heads was Chappell Roan's, who didn’t leave empty-handed either. To receive the "Best New Artist" award, the young American wore a vintage Jean Paul Gaultier dress from the Couture SS03 collection. Among the 52 iconic looks from this collection — featuring classics like the iconic marinière and high-end couture with tulle dresses, sequins, and reimagined professional suits — the chosen look seemed tailor-made for her and the occasion. Known for her medieval and whimsical outfits, including chainmail dresses and pointy hats, she has always presented colorful, fun, yet tasteful looks. This aligns perfectly with the canary-yellow gown she wore last night.

Miley Cyrus in Saint Laurent

After shaking things up last year with her revenge song Flowers, Miley Cyrus graced the Grammy red carpet yesterday with pride and style. Dressed in a backless black leather gown by Saint Laurent, the star also took home a Grammy for the song II Most Wanted, a collaboration with Beyoncé that won "Best Country Duo/Group Performance."

Beyoncé in Schiaparelli

Speaking of Beyoncé, let’s take a moment to admire the stunning Schiaparelli gown she wore. Between winning "Album of the Year," "Best Country Album" for Cowboy Carter, and "Best Duo/Group Performance" for II Most Wanted, she had every reason to look fabulous. With her platinum locks styled sleek and her gloved arms, the star donned a sand-colored mermaid gown adorned with motifs inspired by cowboy bandanas. This "couture rodeo" aesthetic is sure to make another appearance during her Cowboy Carter tour later this year, announced over the weekend. Despite a drama-filled 2024, with allegations against her husband Jay-Z, rumors of secretive affiliations, and LVMH potentially cutting ties with her whiskey brand, 2025 seems to be off to a promising start for the star.

The list of top French designer looks, of course, doesn’t end there. From Gracy Abrams and Margaret Qualley dazzling in blush pink Chanel, to Cynthia Erivo, Jaden Smith with his house-on-head by Louis Vuitton, and Will Smith in Balmain slowly returning to ceremonies after the 2022 Oscars slap incident, the Grammy Awards remind us how deeply rooted French fashion is. Beyond Parisian runways, French designs light up the world stage with their brilliance.
