Movies and TV series not to miss this August From "The Shards" to "Tony - Diary of a Young Cook", the releases you can't miss

August is packed with new releases, but it's the returning shows that really stand out. Leading the way is the fourth season of Ted Lasso, which was initially not planned but sees the character created and played by Jason Sudeikis back on AppleTV+. There's also the fifth and final season of Outer Banks, in which the main characters will have to reckon with revenge. And laughs return with the second season of Adults, gently carrying us through to the end of summer. Plenty of series to keep up with, but also many titles of great interest both in cinemas and on streaming platforms, from Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars with Jacob Elordi to The Last House with Greta Lee and Wagner Moura on Netflix. Here are the titles you can't miss.

Ted Lasso 4 - on AppleTV+ from August 4

A major comeback for serialized television. On August 4, Ted Lasso returns to the dugout for the fourth season of the AppleTV+ show which, rather than wrapping up its story with the third season as originally planned, is gearing up for a new challenge: the character created and played by Jason Sudeikis will this time be coaching a women's football team.

The Shards - on Disney+ from August 6

Based on the book by Bret Easton Ellis, the adaptation of The Shards arrives on Disney+ from August 6. The novel, published in 2023, was taken on by creator Ryan Murphy, who oversaw the adaptation together with the author. The story is set in 1981 and follows a group of teenagers caught up in the atmosphere of terror gripping Los Angeles due to a series of brutal murders.

Outer Banks 5 - on Netflix from August 5

The kids from Outer Banks have grown up. From Drew Starkey working with Luca Guadagnino to Madelyn Cline in the requel of I Know What You Did Last Summer, the cast members are ready to say goodbye to the Netflix series, and they'll do so with the arrival of the fifth season on the platform. The group will pick up from processing the death of JJ and set out on its final mission, determined to avenge their friend.

Hokum - in cinemas from August 5

Adam Scott, this August 2026, will star in two films that continue his move away from comedy, increasingly leaning toward drama and projects that are ready to challenge audiences' perception of him. The first is Hokum, hitting cinemas from August 5, written and directed by Damian McCarthy, about a writer locked in a hotel shrouded in horror and mystery.

One Hundred Years of Solitude - Part 2 - on Netflix from August 5

In 2024, the first part of the adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude, the literary masterpiece by Gabriel García Márquez, was released on Netflix, and it will reach its conclusion in 2026. Part 2 is scheduled for August 5 on the same platform, picking up where the story of José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán left off, before continuing with the generations that came after them.

Nimrods - in cinemas from August 11

Green Day take part in a film inspired by their own story, albeit a reimagined version of it. Nimrods is a comedy about a young man who, convinced he has been called by the famous band to open their concert, embarks on a road trip from Kansas to Los Angeles with his musician friends — not knowing it's all a prank.

The Last House - on Netflix from August 7

Greta Lee and Wagner Moura star in The Last House, the sci-fi horror from Netflix in which the two actors, playing a mother and father, find themselves trapped inside a house with no way out.

Alley Cats - on Netflix from August 7 

Ricky Gervais returns to television, and he does so in animated form. Alley Cats follows a group of stray cats navigating the pitfalls of the human world, peppered throughout with the same cynicism and humor the British comedian is known for.

The End of Oak Street - in cinemas from August 12

Much like in The Last House, in The End of Oak Street a couple of parents must also protect their children from an inexplicable and potentially deadly threat. Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor find themselves facing the arrival of dinosaurs in none other than their own neighborhood.

Robin Hood - The Price of Blood - in cinemas from August 12

Having already starred earlier this year in Sheep Undercover, Hugh Jackman returns to the big screen as the legendary outlaw who stole from the rich to give to the poor. In Robin Hood – The Price of Blood, however, the legend is reimagined with a particularly brutal and gritty twist.

Camp Rock 3 - on Disney+ from August 14

To all the Disney Channel nostalgics out there, we say: fear not — August is saved. On the 13th of the month, Camp Rock 3 arrives, with Demi Lovato taking on only a producer role on the film, while the Jonas Brothers reprise their old parts. The Connect 3 crew — the name of their band in the film — returns to the famous music camp in search of new talent, who will compete for the chance to open their concerts.

Lanterns - on HBO Max from August 17

From August 17, the eight episodes of Lanterns will be released weekly. The HBO drama series is produced by DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television. Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler play two intergalactic police officers investigating a murder in the heart of the United States. The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

Camp Miasma - Adolescence, Sex and Death - in cinemas from August 19

Camp Miasma - Adolescence, Sex and Death was one of the most talked-about titles at the Cannes 2026 festival, where it opened the Un Certain Regard section. The film finally arrives in cinemas from August 19 and explores a world of cinema, fear, and desire, guided by the young protagonist played by Hannah Einbinder — a director who wants to helm the sequel/reboot of a cult horror film and to that end meets its icon, played by Gillian Anderson.

Moana - in cinemas from August 19

Ten years have passed since the release of the animated feature Moana. Now comes its live-action version, with young actress Catherine Laga'aia lending her face to Moana, while Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson no longer just lends his voice to the demigod Maui but also plays him in the flesh (and in song) in the new version directed by Thomas Kail.

Insidious: Beyond the Further - in cinemas from August 19

The Insidious saga continues with its sixth installment, Beyond the Further. This time the protagonist is Gemma, a mother raising her daughter in the house where she was born, who discovers a way to travel into the Further. She must therefore protect herself from the demons that dwell there. The film is directed by Jacob Chase, with Amelia Eve in the role of Gemma.

The Dog Stars - in cinemas from August 26

Jacob Elordi plays the sole survivor of the deadly virus that has devastated the world of The Dog Stars, directed by Ridley Scott. Everything could change, however, when the protagonist discovers that there may still be hope for humanity. The cast also includes Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin.

One Night Only - in cinemas from August 26

Monica Barbaro and Callum Turner star in the rom-com of the month. One Night Only is Will Gluck's comedy set in the near future, where single people are only allowed to have premarital sex on one specific day of the year — the very day the film's two protagonists happen to meet.

Tony - Diary of a Young Cook - in cinemas from August 27

Dominic Sessa steps into the shoes of Anthony Bourdain for Tony – Diary of a Young Cook, a film inspired by Kitchen Confidential, written by the famous chef who helped bring cooking into popular culture and who passed away a few years ago. The film focuses on the early part of his life story. The cast also includes Antonio Banderas and Leo Woodall.

Adults 2 - on Disney+ from August 27

Back comes a comedy that, more than most in recent years, can truly lay claim to the title of sitcom. Adults is ready with its second season, in which we'll catch up with the young protagonists once again grappling with the challenges of grown-up life.

Sheep in the Box - in cinemas from August 27

While Hirokazu Kore'eda prepares to head to the Venice Film Festival with Look Back, his Sheep in the Box arrives in cinemas — also presented this year at the Cannes festival. A feature film set in a future where people who are no longer with us can be replaced by robots, as happens with the son of the family at the center of the story.

The Whisper Man - on Netflix from August 28

Netflix adapts Alex North's novel of the same name, The Whisper Man, assembling a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan, and Michael Keaton. The story follows a writer whose son has gone missing, who turns to his detective father for help — a retired man with whom he has had no relationship for years.
