The Gen Z is one of the generations most affected by anxiety ever. And no young person is more anxious than a university student. As shown by a new survey signed by Lenovo, in the lives of Gen Z university students, technology is no longer just a practical tool but a true psychological support. According to the research promoted by one of the world’s largest computer manufacturers, 88% of Italian students aged 18 to 25 say that digital devices help them feel more supported and in control during periods of greatest pressure. And, in this scenario, the preferred device seems to be the tablet.
Why the tablet?

To understand why the tablet seems to be the favourite among young Italian students, we need to look at its practical aspects. Almost nine out of ten students in Italy (89%) consider it a valuable tool for university life, while 93% particularly appreciate the ability to combine study, creative activities and moments of pause on a single device.
For 36% of Italian respondents, the ability to study on the move is in fact one of the main advantages of the tablet, along with the ease of taking notes in any context. In addition, 46% of students highlight the importance of a high-quality display to promote concentration, while 42% consider essential the functions and tools that help reduce digital interruptions and support their mental wellbeing.
Technology as an anti-stress tool
One of the most interesting aspects to emerge from the research concerns the relationship between devices and emotional pressure management. 88% of Italian students say that technology helps them better manage the most difficult moments of the academic year, generating a greater sense of control. And we are not talking about productivity and data synthesis, but about a real role that touches the emotional sphere in times marked by competition, high expectations and uncertainty about the future.
Even AI, surprisingly, has become a source of security for many students. 97% of Italian university students already use AI tools, especially to summarise long texts, organise notes and stimulate idea generation. The new technology, in short, is seen as a tool to lighten the mental load and free up precious time from trivial tasks.
«This generation lives under constant pressure and looks to technology not for shortcuts, but for reliable tools that help them stay focused, clear-headed and in control of the situation», commented Alessandro De Lio, PCSD Leader of Lenovo Italy. «The tablet thus becomes a unique space that accompanies students throughout the day, seamlessly integrating study, creativity and moments of relaxation».
