To celebrate nss edicola becoming a new media within the nss ecosystem, the very first issue of Edicola Italiana was released during this Design Week, a free press dedicated to the past, present, and future of newsstands and our cities. Within the publication, The newsstand, afterhours takes shape, the editorial created in collaboration with Xiaomi. A photographic reportage that shifts the perspective, moving beyond the daytime and almost ritualistic image of the newsstand to question what happens when the city changes pace. At night, when everything becomes denser and less filtered.
The newsstand, a stage for everyday rituals during the day, undergoes a radical transformation as night falls. Shutters come down, often marked by graffiti, rewriting its surface, while the word of news, with its weight and urgency, withdraws and disappears from the visible space.
The multifaceted dimension of darkness unfolds in its entirety through the Leica ultra-wide lens and, in its details, through the Leica telephoto lens of Xiaomi 17 Ultra. In its place, a dissonant world emerges: kitsch souvenirs, magazines, zines, and ephemeral objects form a visual constellation where the superfluous becomes language, and the Xiaomi 17 Ultra lens sharply captures the dynamism that comes to life in the noisy urban nights, with optics designed in collaboration with Leica.
In the darkness, newsstands appear almost like apparitions: luminous islands resting between cobblestones and asphalt, immersed in an artificial theatricality made of vibrant neon, glossy plastics, and flickering glows. This reality reveals its multifaceted nature through the Xiaomi 17 Ultra lens: mystery and shimmer, frenzy and suspension coexist within a single visual frame in the form of 200 MP. Reflective surfaces, saturated colors, and nocturnal ephemera ignite in a dance of light and reflections, giving the night back its elusive and seductive sense of mystery.
