15 destination dupes for a perfect Italian summer When in doubt, do as the Romans
Italian summer, slow living, pizza, and mandolin. In short, in the international collective imagination, Italy has become the ultimate holiday destination, with millions of tourists arriving every day from every corner of the world. The problem, however, is that tourism in the Bel Paese often concentrates not across the entire territory, but on a tiny fraction of iconic locations that, over time, have started to suffer the consequences of overtourism. That kind of mass tourism has not only driven up prices and altered the perception of many famous destinations, but has also pushed Italians themselves away from their own places. It’s precisely in this context that the phenomenon of “destination dupes” was born: alternative locations that, while less well-known, manage to offer a similar experience — whether in atmosphere, type of trip, or aesthetic resemblance — compared to the more crowded ones.
To go against the tide and rediscover the authenticity of our land, nss magazine has decided to launch a new interactive map of our country’s hidden treasures, starting with 15 all-Italian “dupes”, from the North to the islands, very close to the original destinations but far from the chaos.
Instead of Positano, try Santa Maria di Castellabate
Both overlooking the crystal-clear sea of Campania, they offer picturesque alleys and breathtaking views. Castellabate is the perfect choice for those who want the beauty of the Amalfi Coast without the crowds.
Instead of Noto, try Sciacca
Sicilian cities rich in baroque charm and cultural tradition, but Sciacca has preserved a more authentic atmosphere and slower pace, ideal for a relaxing holiday.
Instead of Portofino, try Zoagli
Both are stunning Ligurian destinations nestled between cliffs and sea, but Zoagli, being less known, offers the same postcard-perfect views and a tranquillity long gone in Portofino.
Instead of the Cinque Terre, try Sestri Levante
The Cinque Terre enchant with colorful houses and panoramic trails, but just a few kilometers away, Sestri Levante offers similar beauty with fewer crowds and two stunning bays.
Instead of Florence, try Comacchio
Comacchio, with its historic bridges and Renaissance vibes, echoes the artistic and architectural elegance of Florence, but without excessive tourism.
Instead of Forte dei Marmi, try Lido di Camaiore
Just a few kilometers away, Camaiore offers wide beaches, great restaurants, and a similar vibe to the more famous Forte dei Marmi, but with more affordable prices and less chaos.
Instead of Porto Rotondo, try the Island of Sant’Antioco
Crystal-clear waters, breathtaking landscapes, and wild nature: Sant’Antioco offers the most authentic Sardinian experience, far from the glamorous chaos of Porto Rotondo.
Instead of Civitanova Marche, try Sirolo
Overlooking the Conero, Sirolo has equally beautiful and lively beaches like Civitanova, but offers a calmer atmosphere and more scenic views.
Instead of Tropea, try Soverato Marina
Azure sea, white beaches, and great cuisine: Soverato offers the charm of Tropea with more room to relax and enjoy the sea without overcrowding.
Instead of Polignano a Mare, try Melendugno
Whitewashed houses and crystal-clear waters define both, but Melendugno is less frequented by tourists, with wild beaches and authentic natural beauty.
Instead of Venice, try Marano Lagunare
Canals, colorful houses, and a miniature Venetian charm — Marano Lagunare offers a similar experience to Venice without the crowds, high prices, and stress.
Instead of Taormina, try Trapani & Erice
Two hilltop Sicilian towns with spectacular sea views: Trapani and Erice offer similar culture, history, and charm as Taormina, but with a more relaxed and authentic vibe.
Instead of Vasto, try San Vito Chietino
San Vito Chietino retains the same Adriatic charm as Vasto, with scenic beaches and traditional restaurants, but with a much slower and more relaxed pace of life.
Instead of Rimini, try Sabaudia
Fun and a laid-back atmosphere reminiscent of California: Sabaudia is the perfect alternative to Rimini, with less chaos and more unspoiled nature, between dunes, pine forests, and the wild charm of the Circeo National Park.
Instead of Peschiera del Garda, try Malcesine
Overlooking Lake Garda, Malcesine offers charming villages and scenic views similar to Peschiera, with the added bonus of more tranquility and breathtaking panoramas.
