Maison Margiela unveils MaisonMargiela/folders and a show in Shanghai An invitation to the Country's public to discover the history of the brand
MaisonMargiela/folders invites the public in Shanghai to step into the conceptual heart of Maison Margiela. More than a simple cultural initiative, this year the brand has conceived a true system of experiences that weaves together fashion, archive, and participation, highlighting the founding codes that have defined the brand’s identity since its beginnings. The project kicks off on April 1, 2026, in Shanghai with the FW26 show, presented as a special guest of Shanghai Fashion Week. This debut marks the beginning of a journey that continues with a series of exhibitions and immersive experiences in four Chinese cities, each dedicated to one of the Maison’s conceptual pillars: Artisanal, Anonymity, Tabi and Bianchetto. All events will be free and open to the public upon registration.
In Shanghai, from April 2 to 6, the exhibition Artisanal: Creative Laboratory celebrates the Maison’s experimental couture approach, presenting Artisanal pieces from 1989 to 2025, up to the runway debut of Glenn Martens. In Beijing, from April 7 to 12, the exhibition Anonymity: Our History of Masks explores the theme of anonymity, one of the brand’s most iconic codes. From the elusive choices of founder Martin Margiela to the use of masks that obscure the models’ faces, the exhibition reflects on identity, absence, and the rejection of the cult of personality.
In Chengdu, from April 9 to 13, Tabi: Collectors Exhibition brings together the collections of ten enthusiasts of the iconic split-toe shoe, a recognizable and provocative symbol of the Maison, reinterpreted over time in countless variations. Finally, in Shenzhen, on April 11 and 12, Bianchetto: Atelier Experience turns the audience into protagonists: visitors will be able to bring their own garments and customize them with white paint, recalling a historic Maison practice that began in 1988.
What makes MaisonMargiela/folders even more radical is the decision to make the brand’s internal Dropbox folders public as of February 10. Images, timelines, documents, and working materials become accessible to everyone, updating over time and documenting the evolution of the project. An open invitation to follow the creative process in real time, exploring the Maison from the inside like never before.
