Interview with Vermibus   The Berlin artist who upset the traditional concept of the advert

Vermibus is a Berlin artist who with creativity and an eye going against the current, has succeeded in his destiny of creating Subvertising. Taking inspiration from street art to recreate it, giving it new life and in so repaying it to the street in a new incarnation.

By taking advertisements from all over the world, Vermibus distorts the original faces and colors presented in them, replacing them after to totally renewed versions on the light paper, through an intricate technique that reveals a new, different subject, capable of communicating an individuality that had been concealed, but lived in the soul of the image. Vermibus brings back to life "what's behind", enhances individuality, paying homage to its essence.

We had the opportunity to ask him some questions, find out what the artist revealed to us!

 

#1 How did it all start, and how did you arrive at the point you are now?

Everything started with a fortunate mistake, I was trying to do something with solvent and the reaction of this chemical over the paper gave me a different result than what I was expecting. All my graffiti background, a series of changes in my life and a lot of time investigating this technique made me do what I'm doing now.

 

#2 How did you choose adverts to be your medium?

I was working in an advertising agency as a photographer when I was still living in Madrid and I got fired because I was not fitting the beauty standards that the client wanted for the whole team. This event radically changed my view of how I was seeing the industry and also changed my life.

 

#3 What would you personally like to convey with your work?

I want to use my personal reflection as a starting conversation about three topics: Public space advertising and it's role in our society, beauty standards imposed by advertising and fashion industry and to explore those dark corners that makes us who we are but that we usually hide.

 

#4 Have you had any direct reactions from the big brands you re-work?

I got many direct reactions from people of the industry but never officially from the brands.

 

#5 How has Berlin affected your art?

My years in Berlin have changed me completely and in all levels. My life changed radically, obviously my work changed with me.

 

#6 What’s next for you?

Only time can say. I try to let myself go with the flow.

 

#7 Have you thought about doing something in Milan, for example during fashion week?

Yes, I did two projects that were partly done in Milan, Dissolving Europe and Unveiling Beauty. In this last one was exactly during the Fashion Week.
