The new collab between Mecedes-Benz and Moncler is designed by Nigo

Between design, art and fashion and the influence of 90s hip-hop culture

In Shanghai, on October 19, 2024, Mercedes-Benz and Moncler unveiled a new chapter of their collaboration during the event The City of Genius. At the center of the show is Project G-Class Past II Future, an art piece by NIGO that reimagines a 1990s G-Class, restored and transformed to reflect today’s visual and cultural codes. NIGO’s creation became the basis for a new limited-edition G-Class, set to launch in April 2025 and produced in just 20 units. Alongside it, a genderless capsule collection co-created with Mercedes-Benz and Moncler was also revealed, and it is scheduled to go on sale at the same time. The G-Class, reinterpreted by NIGO, adopts a bold and minimalist aesthetic. The two-tone olive green and grey bodywork recalls Moncler’s signature puffer materials, while black steel wheels, a foldable windshield, and a golden jerry can on the rear nod to the original 1990s style. The interior blends checkerboard patterns, gold and orange accents, and an audio system designed by Devon Turnbull, known for his immersive sound installations. The speakers are removable, mounted on the soft top, and conceived as an integral part of the vehicle’s aesthetic experience. "In the ’90s, electronic music and hip-hop shaped urban identity. With this project, I wanted to translate that energy into a new contemporary aesthetic,” said NIGO.

Accompanying the new vehicle is a fashion collection that draws on 1990s imagery and fuses it with streetwear silhouettes. The drop, scheduled for April 2025, includes college jackets, hoodies, checked shirts, bermuda shorts, lightweight puffers, parkas, and windbreakers. The primary color palette includes blue, black, green, and white, accented with touches of orange. Detailed graphic prints overlap archival images and Moncler and Mercedes logos. Among the standout pieces are a satin jacket and grey checked shirts that embody the hybrid spirit of the collaboration. Tying all the projects together is the campaign Past Forward. Where the Future is Driven by the Past, created by Thibaut Grevet. Set on an urban rooftop, the campaign reinterprets industrial and metropolitan aesthetics with a stylized lens. The content will be distributed globally across the digital platforms and social media of all three partners, accompanied by a making-of video by Theodor Guelat documenting the creative process behind the scenes.

The G-Class Past II Future and the Moncler x Mercedes-Benz x NIGO capsule collection will be available starting April 2025.
