OLDER Studio take 'Buclicolo' to Design Week

For Design Week, the Italian-Danish sustainable design company OLDER has developed “Buclicolo”, a painted cabinet exploring the meaning of the creative process from a play on words with the word "ombelico" (navel). In four different short films, the founders of OLDER, Letizia Caramia and Morten Thuesen, narrate the project at the Studio Leone Tommasi di Pietrasanta. Thuesen and the photographer Nicola Gnesi captured Caramia in the process of painting the cabinet, a series of footage emphasasing its artistic aspect. The cabinet "Buclicolo" initially arises as a storage space for uniforms and household items, but its pyramidal shape and Caramia's creation infuse the primary function of the furniture with unexpected creativity.

The motif painted by Caramia on "Buclicolo" is a repetition of blue clouds on an eggshell background, a creation that can be interpreted at will by the viewer, while the references to the navel are found in the wholes at the center and sides of the cabinet. The entire project was carried out on set, as the founders recount, «painting is an open creative process that contains the ability to never stop, and so is 'Buclicolo,' a sort of infinite cycle, a motif that never ends, if you will». For some time now, OLDER's work has intertwined functionality with sustainable design, blending projects focused on creating uniforms for international institutions of architecture and gastronomy with furniture design. Thanks to innovative creations like furniform, a uniform that explores the boundaries between workwear and architecture, the studio's works have gained worldwide acclaim, becoming part of the permanent collection of the MAXXI Museum of Architecture and Design in Rome, the ADI Design Museum, and the Hong Kong Design Institute.
