Reducing a year to 5 articles is a rather complex undertaking: It's difficult to determine how a product arrived on the faces of celebrities, on the streets or in the feeds of anyone, and even more complex is trying to interpret the tastes of an increasingly sophisticated and changing audience. But in a year where luxury has splintered into a kaleidoscope of youthful subcultures increasingly aware of the complexity behind the language of fashion - see also the various experiments by brands in the Metaverse - and attempting to simplify the world of streetwear, a strand entirely dedicated to craftsmanship and absolute discretion has endured and is gaining strength. We decided to take the changes into account and select 5 items that changed the game or had a particularly strong appeal to the new generations.

1. The Diesel skirt

There was little doubt that Glenn Martens could give Diesel a second life. If the success of the logo on bags, T-shirts, and underwear boosted the brand's appeal amid the Y2K revival, the scandal came with the Diesel belted skirt. With a design comparable to that of an oversized belt, Diesel's skirts unveiled for the FW22 collection had only caused a stir when they clashed with the opinions and sizes of the real public. Is fashion, if it is uncomfortable, automatically more iconic? That is perhaps one of the questions we should keep in mind for 2023.

2. The Miu Miu ballet flats

Victims of an aesthetic stereotype whose matrices are difficult to delineate, ballerinas now enjoy good health. Designed for the FW22 season, Miu Miu's ballet shoes have gone viral on TikTok and on the streets of major fashion capitals for a new interpretation. This comfortable shoe model, very comfortable indeed, has helped create a micro-trend called ballet core. But the reason they ended up on our year-end list is that Miu Miu was one of the biggest reveals of 2021 and 2022. To her credit, she captured the zeitgeist of our times with extreme ease.

3.  The adidas x Gucci Gazelles

Among the collaborations that have brought the worlds of luxury and streetwear closer together is certainly the one between adidas and Gucci. Drawing on the world of sportswear, the adidas x Gucci collection was particularly successful thanks to the Gazelle low-top sneaker model, which was reworked according to the Florentine fashion house's codes. The GG motif merges with the shamrock, proving once again that collaborations remain one of the most used narratives and commercial tools by fashion brands in 2022. This one is particularly significant as it was born out of Alessandro Michele's memories of the 1980s and 1990s.

4. The Fendi Baguette

In its captivating alternation between center and periphery, luxury and practicality, excess and realism, the Baguette bag, along with the garments and accessories it inspired, is one of pop culture's most enshrined objects. To celebrate the Baguette's 25th anniversary, Fendi creative directors Kim Jones and Silvia Venturini collaborated with Marc Jacobs, Tiffany & Co, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Porter to pay tribute to the iconic bag and the city that shaped its success, New York. The redesign of the Fendi bag is both a creative and commercial experiment and a direct testament to what it means to work effectively with a brand's archive.

5. Balenciaga sunglasses

If there is one brand that has challenged the concept of luxury as we were used to it, Demna's work at Balenciaga must undoubtedly be commended. More than a brand, Demna has created an entertainment machine that has been able to reflect deeply and personally on the contemporary cultural scene, translating it into unusual and experimental objects from a design perspective. This certainly includes the fast oval glasses, a visual text of that post-apocalyptic current that has marked the year 2022 and will probably also play the main role in 2023
