The ten top sci-fi films that have influenced contemporary fashion

Last weekend has arrived in Italian theatres Blade Runner 2049”, the sequel to the 1982 masterpiece directed by Ridley Scott.

This time, there is as director Denis Villeneuve, in the cast Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, and once again by Harrison Ford, the unforgettable Rick Deckard.

The last to bring back the costumes by Michael Kaplan, the clever mix of ‘40s noir elements and futurism which incorporated Claude Montana and Thierry Mugler, was Raf Simon with a SS18 collection carrying the world described by Philip Dick, and made image by Scott in a dark Chinatown, but the link between sci-fi and fashion cinema, has far-reaching and deep roots.

Since actress Anne Francis in the 1956 Forbidden Planet film screened a mini skirt created by costume designer Helen Rose long before Mary Quant transformed it into the 60s as a symbol of female emancipation, these two arts became contaminated, generating phenomena and cult garments. Who can forget the couture sputnik made of transparent dresses, skirts and rompers metallic made of plastic materials Courrege, the pieces in vinyl and space helmets of Cardin or Rabanne’s daring metal creations, aluminum, and plexiglass worn by Jane Fonda in Barbarella?

From Moschino to the iconic white striped costume of Milla Jovovich in The fifth element designed by Jean Paul Gaultier, to Alexander McQueen's large black leather coats reproduced by Oliver Theyskens of The Matrix, also featured by Demna Gvasalia, Gattaca’s icy suits loved by Miuccia Prada and Gareth Pugh, almost every stylist has drawn to the fantasy cinematic sci-fi declinating it according to their own style. Some people like Iris van Herpen or Rick Owens developed the theme indulging in conceptual drifts and who has transformed the Star Trek suggestions and B movies of the genre in an advertising campaign as Alessandro Michele FW17 for Gucci.
