Romeo + Juliet turns 20 today And Baz Luhrmann decided to celebrate

20 years ago Romeo + Juliet, Baz Luhrmann’s second feature film, debuted in the USA. It was a contemporary and daring reinterpretation of the events narrated in one of Shakespeare's most popular (and romantic) works, and its protagonists were a young Leonardo di Caprio, then 22-year-old, and emerging actress Claire Danes, who was just 17.

Together, on the big screen, they defied their families – the Montagues and the Capulets – and succumbed to a pure and unconditional love.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the film, the director, at the time hampered by purists who saw in his 'pop' version a desecration of Shakespeare's original novel, has decided to celebrate it together with all those who made its success possible, and that believed in it from day one.

Using his Instagram and Twitter accounts, Luhrmann has released a series of unpublished contents, behind the scenes photographs and artworks created by fans over the years.

Still don’t know what to do tonight? Watching (again) Romeo + Juliet could be a good way to join the celebrations.
