Apple made $6.5 billion selling its accessories separately To protect the environment and increase revenues

According to a report published in recent days, Apple would have managed to earn over 6 billion dollars after deciding to no longer include its accessories in the packaging of the iPhone. In 2020, in fact, the Cupertino company had decided to exclude headphones and chargers from the packaging of its phones, officially to reduce waste and protect the environment with a choice that at the time was welcomed positively by environmentalists, convinced by Apple's plan that aimed to reduce carbon emissions by two million per year.

Despite the promise of a lower environmental impact, the choice was not so positively received by buyers, who were disappointed by the idea of having to spend more money to buy some essential accessories while the price of the iPhone would remain unchanged. A choice that Apple had justified with a higher technological quality of its products, but that in reality hid a strategy capable of earning 6.5 million dollars to the company, a figure coming in part from the savings generated by the exclusion of accessories in the packages and reduced shipping costs.

In 2020, Apple's Head of Environment Lisa Jackson had stated: «We know customers have been accumulating adapters and that producing millions of unneeded adapters consumes resources and adds to our carbon footprint». Although the chargers and headphones are sold for around €19, the cost of production is much lower, saving the company around €35 on every iPhone sold. In addition, Apple estimates that by 2023 their entire supply chain will be totally carbon neutral.
