A First Parisian Exhibition for the Istituto Europeo di Design Discover SUBSTRUCTURE at Dover Street Market Paris

Stripping down the backbone of creation

Do not expect a classic exhibition displaying mannequins in full ceremonial attire. Here, the finished garment fades away to make room for the process itself. IED’s goal is to offer a radical, unconventional perspective on fashion. Rather than celebrating the final outcome, Substructure chooses to reveal the "system of invisible foundations" that supports a collection.

It is a raw dive into the very backbone of creation: a living flow made of mood boards, reference images, sketches thrown on paper, fabric swatches, as well as doubts and suspended gestures.

A (mental) space to explore

Within the historic walls of the town house located at 35-37 rue des Francs-Bourgeois, the exhibition space is almost empty, minimalist. On the walls, video projections come to life like moving thoughts, instantly plunging the visitor into the mind of a creator in full effervescence.

In the midst of this somewhat poetic void, trial garments (the famous design toiles) emerge like silent, unfinished, and intangible presences. As the very first physical draft of a garment, they constitute its technical base - the absolute anchor to which the designer constantly refers. The final fabric, the true aesthetic showpiece, only comes at the very end, once these structural foundations are perfectly solid.

The foundations of a generation

By choosing to show what is usually hidden, the exhibition beautifully highlights the work of IED students. Still in the midst of their learning journey, they explore new creative territories while consolidating the core of their technical expertise.

This staging creates a fascinating interplay that invites a multitude of reflections. How do we teach creativity today? How does the new generation perceive the temporality of creation in an era of immediacy? Substructure brilliantly reminds us that in fashion as in architecture, the beauty of a work depends first and foremost on the strength of what remains unseen.

The exhibition will open on Friday, July 17th with an opening cocktail and will remain open until Sunday, July 19th (from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM).
