Classy normcore according to SUNNEI

One of the best collections of this fashion month

Classy normcore according to SUNNEI One of the best collections of this fashion month

In the bright and total white spaces of Palazzo del Ghiaccio, yesterday went down the FW19 show of SUNNEI. The sophisticated, contemporary, sometimes conceptual but always wearable fashion designed by the two founders of the brand, Loris Messina and Simone Rizzo, is once again one of the most interesting and strong collections of this Fashion Week.

This is the most intimate collection for us. We started by looking at drawings we did when we were young, as teenagers, more or less.

A lightness and a simplicity in the silhouettes, with a nostalgic touch, perfectly recognizable in the denim pieces - always elegant and unexpected -, in the pants, in the striped suits, in the knitwear, - especially in that super 90s knitted dress with bare shoulders -. The stand out items were the long coats, contemporary and never austere, the sportswear inspired jackets, paired with striped trousers, and above all, the women's suits: double-breasted slightly oversized jackets worn with cargo-pants with an elastic band on the ankle.

For this season, Rizzo and Messina tried to experiment something different from their usual normcore, for example with a paillette-covered silver skirt or a an iridescent burgundy-hue collared shirt.

Two of the characterising elements of SUNNEI are the color palette and the selection of prints. In this collection the real protagonists were the nude nuances, that at times turned acid: yellow, lime, green, but also different hues of blue, burgundy and brown. The classic striped prints of the brand are used once again for the men's suits and the big scarves, or for classic long-sleeve T-shirts, while the real surprise were the prints inspired by Windows 98 screensavers: the famous meadow-and-cloud-scape was printed all over a big jumper, while a print of tulips adorned a simple long tight dress.

The nostalgic vibe was especially clear in the accessories, above all in the platform leather boots, that would totally go with the style of a '90s popstar. When it comes to accessories, the bags are the real highlight of SUNNEI, as well as the sunglasses and the earrings. On the other hand, the sneakers were a bit disappointing: even though the decision to not use well-known brands or collaborate with giants of this industry it's appreciable, the shoes were quite anonymous, and a bit boring.

Rizzo and Messina proved that they know what they're doing, theirs is a concrete, lively fashion, that doesn't need to scream or exaggerate to be heard and appreciated, that doesn't need collaborations with bigger brands to stand out. This collection is the perfect balance between past and present, between more structured and more relaxed outfits, between normality and overstatement. Everything we want from a fashion show worthy of the name.
