Since time immemorial, summer has been the season of love – or, more precisely, of weddings. 2026 was no exception, as within the space of just a few weeks we witnessed three of the most eagerly anticipated celebrity weddings of the year. From the recent gothic-Victorian nuptials of Matty Healy and Gabriette, celebrated at Madonna's former estate in the Hollywood Hills with a custom look by Matières Fécales, to the dolce vita-infused Palermo weekend of Dua Lipa and Calum Turner, to the controversial wedding of Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce at Madison Square Garden (about which, paradoxically, very little is still known).

And yet something seems to have changed. Today, celebrity weddings appear to be designed more for Pinterest boards than for tabloid covers. Aesthetics have replaced excess: what was once a concentrated display of extravagance, plot twists and personality now chases an ideal of understated elegance, rigorously timeless. But it wasn't always this way. To recall an era when the star system had no fear of being kitsch, here are five of the strangest celebrity weddings of all time.

Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski

The wedding between Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski, celebrated in London in January 1968, was one of the defining symbols of Swinging London. Tate abandoned the traditional bridal gown in favour of an ivory beaded minidress, a short veil and white go-go boots, while Polanski sported a bohemian velvet suit. After the ceremony, the newlyweds celebrated at the Playboy Club in Mayfair, surrounded by Bunny Girls and a host of friends and celebrities. Little more than a year later, their story would be tragically marked by the murder of Sharon Tate at the hands of Charles Manson's cult.

Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock 

After years of on-again, off-again drama, Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock married in the summer of 2006, creating a travelling celebration that began aboard a yacht off the coast of Saint-Tropez and continued with a series of parties across Beverly Hills, Nashville and Detroit. The image that went down in history is that of Anderson in a white bikini, captain's hat and stiletto heels, in place of the classic wedding dress. A permanent afterparty, the perfect crowning moment of Y2K trash-glam. The marriage, however, lasted only four months.

Dita Von Teese and Marilyn Manson

Long before gothcore became a TikTok trend, Dita Von Teese and Marilyn Manson had already turned their wedding into a perfect showcase of their artistic flair. Celebrated in 2005 at Gurteen Castle in Ireland, the reception looked as though it had stepped straight out of a Tim Burton film: Von Teese wore a sweeping purple Vivienne Westwood gown, Marilyn Manson a black Victorian-style suit, while guests were immersed in an atmosphere of falcons, horse-drawn carriages, candelabras, skulls and gothic references throughout.

Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos

If there is one wedding destined to go down in history for the controversy it sparked, it is that of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos. More than for the couple themselves, the 2025 nuptials made headlines for turning Venice into a playground for the 1%. For an entire weekend, the city was effectively reserved for the guests of the Amazon founder: luxury hotels, water taxis, historic palazzos and exclusive venues were all booked to host one of the most powerful guest lists in the world, comprising entrepreneurs, actors, musicians and members of royal families.

Elizabeth Taylor's Eight Weddings

However much celebrity weddings have become Hollywood productions, nothing can ever compete with the eight weddings of Elizabeth Taylor. The actress said "I do" eight times to seven different men, turning each new ceremony into a worldwide event. In 1950 she married Hilton hotel chain heir Conrad "Nicky" Hilton Jr., followed by actor Michael Wilding, producer Mike Todd and singer Eddie Fisher. The most celebrated chapter, however, was with Richard Burton, Hollywood's most talked-about love affair: they married in 1964, divorced ten years later, remarried in 1975 and divorced again less than a year after that. Rounding out the series were senator John Warner and construction worker Larry Fortensky, whom she met in rehab and married at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch, with the King of Pop as best man.
