The Institut Français de la Mode celebrates forty years in 2026 The school that feeds every luxury house celebrates its milestone
Perched along the banks of the Seine, the Cité de la Mode et du Design spans 15,000 square meters. In 2005, architect duo Dominique Jakob and Brendan MacFarlane reimagined the former Magasins Généraux warehouses, wrapping their reinforced concrete skeleton in a green-tinted metal and screen-printed glass "plug-over" designed to echo the river’s reflections. Illuminated at night through lighting designed by artist Yann Kersalé, this organic structure houses the beating heart of Parisian creation: the Institut Français de la Mode (IFM), which occupies 9,000 square meters and celebrates four decades of innovation, craftsmanship, and transmission in 2026.
Four decades of evolution and innovation
A pioneer since its founding in 1986 with a postgraduate program in fashion management, IFM gradually established itself as an essential pillar of the sector in Paris. The institution continuously expanded its scope, opening to design in 2000, moving into the Cité de la Mode et du Design in 2008, and gaining official recognition from the French Ministry of Higher Education in 2011.
The year 2019 marked a historic turning point with its merger with the prestigious École de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. Founded in 1927, the historic institution trained fashion legends such as Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, Valentino Garavani, and Issey Miyake. By uniting design, management, and technical savoir-faire under one roof, the school created an academic model unique in the world. Supported by the establishment of its Foundation in 2020 and a full campus renovation in 2021, IFM continues to expand its offerings for its 40th anniversary, offering programs of excellence ranging from preparatory courses to a new Specialization Certificate in Haute Couture launched in 2026.
Today, IFM has evolved far beyond a traditional school to become a major player on the international fashion calendar. Each season, its graduate show holds the honor of opening Paris Fashion Week Men’s. An unmissable event for recruiters, journalists, and global buyers, this showcase offers a first look at the talent shaping tomorrow’s fashion landscape.
IFM's ecosystem is reflected as much in student achievement as in the vitality of its brand incubator. Emerging designers such as Jeanne Friot are among its alumni, while leading figures of the young French design scene, including Louis-Gabriel Nouchi and Alphonse Maitrepierre, developed their labels through its incubation program.
A pioneering vision and industry-rooted governance
Born under the impetus of Pierre Bergé, legendary co-founder of Yves Saint Laurent, IFM was built on a precise conviction: training executives capable of understanding, protecting, and fostering the creative process.
This synergy between design and business is driven by executive leadership. The school is chaired by Sidney Toledano and led by Dean Xavier Romatet, who assumed the post in 2019. Together, they maintain a multidisciplinary model where students from vocational levels to Doctorate degrees - alongside Bachelor’s, Master’s, and MBA candidates - continuously exchange ideas. Deep roots in the French capital and close partnerships with luxury giants such as LVMH, Kering, Chanel, Hermès, and L'Oréal provide students direct exposure to industry realities.
International reach and record career placement
In 2026, IFM hosts 1,400 students across fashion management (620 students), design and creation (436 students), and traditional craftsmanship (344 students). The school attracts global talent, with over 55% international enrollment representing 70 nationalities. The admissions process is highly competitive; the Master of Arts in Fashion Design receives nearly 350 applications for just 20 available spots.
This high selectivity delivers strong post-graduation results: 83% of graduates secure employment following their studies, a figure approaching 100% for technical craftsmanship programs inherited from the couture school. Furthermore, 60% of all graduates join leading luxury houses. Today, this alumni network fuels the global fashion and beauty landscape. From creative design to executive boardrooms, graduates occupy key positions as artistic directors at established houses or as CEOs and senior executives at renowned companies including Isabel Marant, Alaïa, Clarins, Maybelline, Pandora, and Victoria Beckham.
Forty years after its founding, IFM's ultimate promise remains unchanged: providing creative talent an open-ended space for experimentation. A fitting milestone for a school that continues to shape the silhouettes of tomorrow.
