Are you ready for the "short shorts" summer?

From Harry Styles to the catwalk, 2025 is a skimpy year

Are you ready for the short shorts summer? From Harry Styles to the catwalk, 2025 is a skimpy year

As temperatures rise, the length of men’s trousers shortens, and this summer, men’s shorts are getting even shorter. It could be due to the strong comeback of the sculpted male body culture, driven by a GymTok full of leg-defining workouts, or simply for reasons of functionality and necessity tied to increasingly hot summers. One thing is clear: micro shorts for men are claiming more space, both in celebrity street style and on the runways of summer menswear collections. Just a few days ago, Harry Styles was spotted strolling through the streets of London in red Adidas mini shorts paired with Prada’s viral mustard flat shoes, a yellow tote, and a purple cap—a look that could easily become the go-to outfit for many men this season. Micro shorts have always been a staple in celebrities’ daily wardrobes, from JFK Jr’s beachwear to the gym looks of Jacob Elordi and Jeremy Allen White. Leading the charge for the “short shorts boys club” is Paul Mescal, frequently photographed in rugby shorts worn year-round. Actor Alexander Skarsgård also recently appeared on the British talk show Lorraine wearing checked shorts by S.S. Daley, confessing to the host that he chose the look because “he wanted to be sexy today.” The fashion system, ever in tune with evolving consumer tastes, seems to be fully embracing the micro shorts trend.

In the SS25 menswear collection by Gucci, still designed at the time by Sabato De Sarno, we find tailored shorts fastened with the house’s classic Horsebit buckle. On the runway, these shorts are so short they almost disappear under patterned or fringed shirts and striped polos. Dolce & Gabbana, on the other hand, make this item part of the uniform of the Sicilian «masculu». In their SS25 collection titled “Italian Beauty”, the designer duo offers high-waisted pleated shorts held up by braided leather belts or foulards, paired with perforated cardigans and polos crafted with artisanal techniques reminiscent of chair caning and basket weaving. Short shorts also feature heavily in more preppy looks, like in Louis Vuitton’s Resort 2025, where Pharrell Williams pairs them with Norwegian-patterned sweaters, leather loafers, and ribbed white socks with pearl-edged cuffs. Similarly, in FW25, Lazoschmidl matches striped cropped shirts and ties with white boxers, worn with high socks and office-ready lace-up shoes. Thom Browne makes micro shorts a staple of his personal uniform and collections—in the Pre-fall 2025 menswear line, the shorts become more “quirky” and less stiff, featuring playful and childlike prints paired with “dachshund-shaped” bags. Meanwhile, Lacoste returns to its natural habitat in SS25, showcasing white and green tennis sets with micro shorts and polos embroidered with the word “match” on the chest.

Some, however, prefer boxers over shorts, now being virtually the same length. Dsquared2 in its Resort 2026 collection, set in a kind of public bathhouse, features classic button-front underwear-style shorts paired with a Marine-inspired jacket, alongside a range of swimwear styled in an urban, beach-free context. Maximilian Davis at Ferragamo, drawing inspiration from ballet dancer aesthetics, interprets the trend with knitted skirt-trousers in the SS25 collection, styled with layered tank tops and crinkled jackets. Jonathan Anderson, in his latest menswear show for Loewe (SS25), proposes glossy denim shorts that almost look plastic-coated, while in his most recent summer collection for his namesake label (JW Anderson), the British designer replaces micro shorts with equally short cycling shorts, paired with oversized bomber jackets resembling knit cardigans and suede combat boots. Some designers amplify the erotic and sexy vibe evoked by this garment—Rick Owens in FW25 pairs leather shorts with chunky boots, while Ludovic de Saint Sernin and LGN Louis Gabriel Nouchi highlight the queer allure of micro shorts. The former, in SS25, styles them with leather ballet flats, while the latter includes shorts resembling wrestling trunks in the SS25 collection, worn with low-cut shirts and leather jackets.
