Quali sono le tue principali influenze musicali e quale sarebbe la tua lineup perfetta se potessi scegliere tra tutti gli artisti?

 

Le mie influenze musicali possono provenire da una vasta gamma di stili musicali. Cerco di non tenermi a uno stile particolare di produzione, dato che amo tanti stili diversi di House. Negli ultimi anni la mia influenza musicale principale è venuto dalla musica soul, disco e hip hop. Ho sempre avuto un debole per l'hip hop, dove ho iniziato con la produzione musicale. Io amo i suoni grezzi di hip hop underground e sono ispirato da artisti come J Dilla, Tribe Called Quest e Wu Tang Clan. In termini di musica house prendo ispirazione da artisti del calibro di Maceo Plex, le produzioni sia come Maetrik che come Maceo Plex sono davvero sorprendenti. Amo tutto quello che fa, e al momento per me lui definisce lo standard per la produzione di musica elettronica. Damian Lazarus è il mio preferito come DJ.

 

Qual è la tua musica preferita e che musica suoni? L'ispirazione può venire da tutti i ceti sociali, ma cosa ti ispira a fare la tua musica?

 

Trovo davvero difficile dire che ho un determinato tipo di musica preferito. Ho un vero e proprio debole per la disco / soul con influenze house, ma io sono altrettanto attratto dall'house oldschool e dalla techno. Quando suono mi piace cercare di occupare un pò tutti i generi, per quanto possibile, in modo da dare all'ascoltatore una sensazione di un viaggio attraverso tutte le sonorità disco, house e techno. Trovo che può davvero lasciare un'impronta duratura sulla folla. Trovo l' ispirazione musicale una cosa veramente strana che solo negli ultimi anni sto iniziando a comprendere appieno. A volte, se voglio trovare ispirazione ascolto alcuni stili di musica molto diversi, cercando  nuovi VST, sfogliando alcuni vecchi campioni, ascolto alcuni vecchi brani che ho fatto, ascolto la musica che i miei amici fanno, o talvolta semplicemente trascorro pò di tempo a leggere sulle tecniche di produzione e la musica in generale. 

 

Come si può definire la tua musica a chi non l'ha mai ascoltata?

 

Beh, cerco di non attenermi ad uno stile e sicuramente a non seguire le tendenze! Mi piace mettere molta enfasi sul ritmo, batteria e percussioni. Suppongo che se dovessi cercare di spiegare il mio suono sarebbe crudo, intricato e spontaneo. Ho da poco finito un album per Nocturnal Recordings che è più o meno influenzato dalla disco, e sono davvero soddisfatto ed entusiasta, ma allo stesso tempo,vorrei parlare del mio prossimo EP su Love Not Money che è formato da un synth scuro che guida la base della traccia con  una pausa old schola ..... quindi credo che sia davvero difficile definire il mio stile ma mi piace essere sicuro che possa  lasciare il segno.

 

 

Se potessi collaborare con qualsiasi artista / artisti chi sarebbe e perché?

 

Questa è una domanda interessante e potrei dire parecchi nomi di artisti con i quali vorrei collaborare .... credo che direi Maceo Plex dato che al momento le sue produzioni mi entusiasmano. Ma sarei interessato anche a collaborare con Daniel Bortz, Nico Purman, Larse, MANIK, Sub-Ann Miguel Campbell. Di recente una mia traccia è stata remixata da Dario Syrossian, ed è stato un onore enorme per me e il suo remix si è rivelato una traccia incredibile della quale sono davvero entusiasta.

Who are your main influences musically and what would your perfect event lineup be if you could choose any artists?

 

I find my musical influences can come from a wide range of music styles. I try not to hold myself to one particular style of production as i love so many different styles of house. In recent years my main musical influence has come from soul music, disco and hip hop. I have always had a soft spot for hip hop and its where i started out with music production. I love the raw sounds of underground hip hop and i am massively inspired by artists like J Dilla, Tribe Called Quest and Wu Tang Clan. In terms of house music I take inspiration from the likes of Maceo Plex, who's productions both as Maetrik and Plex are truly amazing. I love everything he makes and for me he sets the standard for electronic music production at the moment. Damian Lazarus is my personal favourite as a DJ. I have seen him play numerous times all over the world and he has never failed to take my breath away! 

 

What is your favourite music and what music do you play? Inspiration can come from all walks of life but what inspires you to make your music?

 

I find it really hard to say i have a specific favourite type of music as it seems to vary every week, which is probably reflected in my productions. I have a real soft spot for sub 120bpm disco/soul influenced house, but i am equally as comfortable listening to and playing stripped back house and techno. When i play out i like to try and span genres as much as possible to give the listener a sense of a journey through all things disco, house and techno. I find that can really leave an lasting impression on a crowd. I find musical inspiration a really strange thing that only in the last year am i starting to fully understand. Sometimes if i want to get inspired i will listen to some really different styles of music, get some new vsts, flick through some old samples, listen to some old tracks i have made, listen to music my friends have made, or sometimes just spend some time reading up on production techniques and music in general. It really can come from anywhere, but when it comes it needs to be addressed straight away, which isn't always to my girlfriends liking!!! :-) 

 

How can you define your music to people who may not have heard it?

 

Well not really because i try not to stick to one style and i definitely do not follow trends!!! I do like to put a lot of emphasis on rhythm, drums and percussion. I suppose if i had to try to explain my sound it would be raw, intricate and spontanious. I have recently finished an album for Nocturnal recordings which is pretty much all disco influenced which i am really pleased with and excited about, but in the same breath i could talk about my forthcoming EP on Love Not Money which is a dark synth driven track based around an old school break.....so i guess its really hard to pin point my style but i like to make sure it leaves an impression. 

 

If you could collaborate with any artist/artists who would it be and why?

 

This is an interesting question and i could easily reel off loads of people i would like to wok with....I guess i would have to say Mace Plex at the moment as his productions simply blow me away. I also have a lot of time for Daniel Bortz, Nico Purman, Larse, MANIK, Sub-Ann and Miguel Campbell. I have recently had one of my tracks remixed by Darius Syrossian which was a massive honour for me and its turned out to be an amazing track which i am really excited about. There is a lot of local talent in my home city of Leeds, a lot of whom are good friends of mine who i know we will get together very soon, its just very difficult to find the time at the moment!
