Love letter to AC Milan jersey

The Milan Derby might be considered as one of the most important episodes in soccer history. Despite in the last few years both teams were not able to deliver a worthy and interesting show, in the next few days the “cousins” will get on the pitch to play one of the most competitive matches all around the world.

Because of this, we decided to choose five Milan’s jerseys amongst the best in Milan’s history. Let’s be honest: it was not that easy. We had to cut several jerseys which have been both good looking and critic to the Rossoneri. Nonetheless, I think the ones we chose represent the most important and the most beautiful AC Milan had in his history.

Season 1988/89

This jersey is one of the most attractive and historic jersey in AC Milan's history. Berlusconi acquired AC Milan in 1986: after two years the Rosseoneri, sponsored by Kappa, won the Champions Cup. Another gem: during the Serie A AC Milan was wearing the jerseys sponsored by Mediolanum – in the picture Van Basten raise his first Ballon d’Or – while in the Champions League it was not allowed to play with a sponsorship.

Season 1996/97

The peculiarity of this jersey is the changings in the patch positions: in order to put the Scudetto on the chest, the AC Milan patch was moved on the left arm. In this case, the technical sponsor was Lotto which maintained the same design between ’94 and ’97. For the first time, Lotto released a total black kit-  worn by George Weah in the picture – which can be definitely considered one of the best “alternate” in AC Milan’s history.

Season 1999/00

Adidas delivered for the AC Milan centenary ones of the best jerseys which have ever been made. The German brand created two versions: the first one, which can be considered the classic one, had larger stripes with the Scudetto on the chest and a cup on the left sleeves which was meant to remember the 100 years of AC Milan. Instead, the centenary jersey had tighter stripes with Milan patch on the chest and the Scudetto on the left sleeve.

Season 2002/03

During this season adidas realized another amazing jersey. The newnesses  were more than one: on one hand numbers on the back were changed and made “riddled” while on the other hand it was added a particular small net inside the jersey which was made with a breathable material. During this season AC Milan with Rivaldo’s help will win the Champions League against Juventus FC.

Season 2006/07

The partnership between Adidas and AC Milan kept growing: for the first time, thanks to the success obtained during the 2006 World Cup, the German brand put his own symbol in the middle of the chest, keeping AC Milan patch on the left. AC Milan played that season with gold numbers during Seria A , while in Champions League white and red numbers had been used. During the crazy match against Manchester United played at Old Trafford, AC Milan worn a very rare combination: the Rossoneri played with white jersey and black shorts. The Athen’s Final will deliver the seventh Champions League to AC Milan.
