At the helm of Balenciaga for just a few months now, Pierpaolo Piccioli seems intent on putting the body back at the center of the brand's wardrobe. The creative director is tackling a territory left largely unexplored by his predecessors—most notably Demna—by developing a line of pieces made from technical fabrics. The goal? To combine pure performance with the house’s historic pillars: textile innovation and the couture spirit.
While this foray into the athletic wardrobe is unprecedented, technical research is deeply embedded in the DNA of the brand founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1917. A century later, Piccioli is pushing the boundaries of couture to align with the aspirations of his contemporary clientele, who place sport and wellness at the core of their lifestyle.
"The Balenciaga TechWear collection and the events organized for its launch emphasize the integrity of the body."
Wellness, Signed Balenciaga
To accompany the launch of this collection, titled "Body and Being," Balenciaga is taking things to the next level by taking over the mythical Place des Vosges in the heart of the Marais. From June 26 to 28, right in the midst of the Men's Fashion Week buzz, the house will open a temporary smoothie and energy snack bar.
On the menu? Sophisticated recipes enriched with marine collagen—the must-have ingredient of the season—or peanut butter. But it is the names of the drinks above all that showcase the brand's ambition to support its community in their daily lives: Main Character, Back to Life, Green Flag or Glow with the Flow.
It is a clever move that allows Balenciaga to open up to a broader audience. This type of experiential event inevitably draws the curious and fashion enthusiasts who might not necessarily have the budget to purchase pieces from the collection in-store, but can thus treat themselves to a piece of the brand’s universe.
In tandem with this activation, the collection unveils its first pieces: lightweight taffeta tracksuits, graphic cut-out bodysuits, and ultra-breathable elastic leggings. The ultimate wardrobe for the couture athlete.
