It's no longer be possible to wear the number 88 in Italy This was decided by Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi to counter anti-Semitism in football

One of the most controversial jersey numbers in football will no longer be allowed to be used on the pitch. Indeed, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has banned the use of the number 88 on Serie A and lower league jerseys. The reason for this is the importance attached to the number in right-wing extremist circles, where the 88 symbolises the Heil Hitler salute. The government's decision is part of the declaration of intent to combat anti-Semitism signed at the Viminale with the world of football, as well as the code of ethics signed by Italian sports clubs. So say goodbye to a controversial number worn in Serie A among others by Gianluigi Buffon, Mario Pasalic, Gokhan Inler and Hernanes.

"With this document the reference to the international definition of anti-Semitism is implemented. Thus, there is the prohibition of the use of symbols reminiscent of Nazism by fans, the obligation for members to use non-discriminatory language at all public events and the definition of the modalities for the suspension of matches in case of incidents of discrimination. The proactive attitude of the clubs in this area will also be positively assessed," said Minister Piantedosi. A decision that is already sparking debate between those who believe the problem is negligible and those who believe it is just a way of not addressing the real causes of anti-Semitism and discrimination in football.
