The history of national teams is not only made up of world victories, great achievements and inimitable talents, but also and above all of jerseys that have changed history and logos that have become symbols of cultural eras in the collective imagination. In fact, each national team brings with it a unique aesthetic heritage and in each federation there are brands that have gone down in history, which likewise have written part of the successes and failures achieved on and off the pitch, in a rather significant way. Portugal is one of these national teams, since 1997 linked to Nike, one of the longest lasting relationships in the world of sports sponsorship. A relationship, however, that may have come to an end, as reported by several rumours. The Lusitanian federation, after 26 years, is ready to change, putting an end to the relationship with Nike, faithful sponsor of one of the most representative players of the Portuguese selection, Cristiano Ronaldo, to switch to PUMA.

An agreement, however, that will not be made official any time soon and will most likely only be formalised in 2025. Portugal are in fact tied with Nike until then, which means that in the next European Championship in 2024, which will be played in Germany, the national team will be on the pitch with Nike kits. The debut in an official competition with PUMA will then come in 2026, when the national team will play the long-awaited World Cup in Mexico, USA and Canada. A heavy blow for the swoosh that will lose one of its most famous national teams and that at the moment does not seem to have any other national team that can in some way fill the void that the Lusitanian national team will leave.
