This morning Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau and FC Barcelona President Joan Laporta announced during a joint press conference that the City Council’s Governing Commission has given the green light to the Camp Nou modernization works. The Catalan city's historic stadium will become the center of the Espai Barça project, which will begin in June just after the end of the football season.

The internal works at Camp Nou will include the demolition of the structure in the area of the south gate where the Medical Center was located, the restoration, anti-carbonation and waterproofing of the stands, as well as structural finishes and the improvement and renovation of the retransmission systems. In terms of technological innovation, the plan calls for the installation of new telecommunications connections, the relocation of the data processing center, the creation of a technical monitoring room for telecommunications and the installation of new facilities for the TV Compound and the parking of mobile TV units.

The announced demolition of the third tier of the stadium will take place at a later date, most likely in the summer of 2023, thus ensuring that for next season Camp Nou will remain virtually at full capacity. An earlier demolition would have meant having to play the 2022/23 season with only 50% of the capacity while now the demolition will coincide with the transfer of Camp Nou's activity to the Lluís Companys stadium in Montjuïc.

One of the priorities of the new Camp Nou, which could be renamed Spotify Camp Nou after the agreement signed with the leading music streaming platform, obviously lies in greater environmental sustainability with the aim of making it a landmark. The new plans include a number of improvements that will have a direct positive impact on the environment and are expected to reduce the club's carbon footprint, increase the circular economy and improve the biodiversity of the area. Like many European facilities, Barca's stadium is ready for a makeover, so all we have to do now is wait for the official start of the work.
