The city of Tokyo is portrayed through the shots of Nicolò Giovannoni His new book Love is a Lonely Thought, Pain is the Only Feeling

The old Edo is not an anonymous metropolis. The neon city has a life of its own, lively and bustling, inhabited by millions of faces that follow one another, leaving no traces. Photographer Nicolò Giovannoni chose to portray it through an analog camera, to capture the essence of the city: from youth clubs to silent streets at night. Each frame is alive, exuding a lifestyle that no one talks about.

The city seen through the eyes of the youth

Giovannoni’s Tokyo is unfiltered, capturing the faces of strangers who, as the pages turn, become friends to those observing them. Perhaps precisely because the frames are not meant to be perfect, but to represent the heart of the city in the depths of darkness. The photographs are witness to a vibrant age, youth, which is not afraid of getting lost thinking about the future, but instead prefers to enjoy the present moment of the night, when no one can judge it.

The book contains 160 pages printed on thick paper which, through the blood red color, underline the hidden meaning of Japanese nights. The chosen tone, used as the background of the images, preserves the memories of every shot, adding a passionate value. Love is a Lonely Thought, Pain is the Only Feeling is a testimonial of the city, narrated through images: what was experienced during the night will not be forgotten thanks to Giovannoni’s shots. And if in the future these images were to be found again, the viewers could relive the story of a hidden Tokyo, lived by the young in the dark.
