The Black Panther

Os genio vivem para sempre. Wandering through Alfama’s steep and narrow alleys - the most ancient of Lisbon’s districts - it’s almost difficult not to bump into something that remembers Eusébio da Silva Ferreira, or just Eusebio. Even if not born in Portugal, Eusebio was Portuguese for his entire life. Lourenco Maeques, today known as Maputo, it’s Mozambico’s capital, which in 1942 was a Portuguese colony.

But Lisbon it’s the first city outside Africa that Eusebio knows, it’s his city, the one that he holds by the hand and takes on Europe’s rooftop. With Benfica, Eusebio became Champion of Europe, he wins a Ballon d’Or and become one of the best players in football’s history. 

It was also a pioneer of NASL, American MLS’ forefather, which in some golden years could count on both Eusebio and Pelé appearance. But most of all: Eusebio used to move with a natural elegance, both in and outside the field, dressed with early eighties’ fashion, the Black Panther conquered the world with strength and charm.

January 5th, 2014, Eusebio died due to an heart attack. He will live forever in Lisbon, in his soul, in his land. We wanted to honor the Black Pearl with some of the most beautiful pictures of his life, which reflect the myth of and vanguardist, unique and total player.
