January is the month in which the South and North American championships officially kick off. Championships certainly differ from the European ones we are accustomed to, first of all it is the formula that varies, in Mexico for example the 18 participants play two tournaments, the 'opening' and 'clausura'. Each of the two tournaments has a different winner and consists of a first phase structured with an Italian round. At the end of the one-off round, the top eight qualify for the knockout phase, known as the Liguilla, with round-robin matches this time. The first match of the first tournament has already been staged, with all the teams trying to catch the record of the most titled and undoubtedly most famous club, Club America. In the Mexican league there are eight brands competing for the 18 teams, the most present being Charly, a Mexican brand born in Mexico City in 1977 and formerly known as Campanita. But in addition to local brands that sponsor several teams, there are also brands that monopolise, or almost monopolise, the major European leagues such as Nike, adidas and PUMA, which have created more than imaginative kits.

Converting a jersey into a cultural symbol is always a complicated and labour-intensive process, but in Mexico and Mexican football it is easier to combine culture and Fútbol, thanks to the heritage of the Aztec world. A typical example is Cancun FC, a team that plays in the second national league, but which together with Nike has churned out one of the most interesting jerseys on the Mexican scene and beyond. Between references to tradition, sponsors on every inch of the jersey, famous or unknown brands, we discover one of the most recognisable leagues in the world.
