UK sanctions against Abramovich freeze club and block sale, jeopardizing the season's regularity

Chelsea is in trouble UK sanctions against Abramovich freeze club and block sale, jeopardizing the season's regularity

The repercussions of the global sanctions against Russia continue, this time affecting Roman Abramovich and, consequently, his Chelsea. The British government has in fact made it known that it has frozen all of the Russian oligarch's assets, including of course the London team that was recently put up for sale. In addition, all of Abramovich's sources of income that derive from Chelsea FC have been blocked, so the Blues at the moment cannot sell in their stores neither tickets for upcoming matches nor official merchandising. Only those who already have season tickets will be able to access Stamford Bridge. The outgoing and incoming market has also been frozen, including the contacts of expiring players who cannot be renewed.

Chelsea could have a special license to complete the transfer of ownership, but in the event of the sale Abramovich could not collect a single pound. Already he had made it clear last week that he would donate the entire sum to the victims of the war in Ukraine. "There can be no safe places for those who have supported Putin's attack on Ukraine", said yesterday the Prime Minister Boris Johnson while the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lizz Truss, made it known that "Chelsea will receive licenses to continue to play but this license will only allow for certain explicitly named actions to ensure that Abramovich is unable to circumvent UK sanctions"
