Roma have put the 2001/02 jersey back on sale

Iconic Kappa jersey returns, only used in the Champions League

Roma have put the 2001/02 jersey back on sale Iconic Kappa jersey returns, only used in the Champions League

Some fans have ironically dubbed it the 'Palio di Siena' jersey, due to the vertical division that resembles a contrada jersey, but in reality the shirt made by Kappa in 2001/02 for the Champions League is perhaps one of the most iconic in Roma's history. A half-yellow, half-red shirt that the club led by the Friedkin brothers, together with COPA, has decided to bring back to life in a version that is perfectly faithful to the original and which is already available online today and in all AS Roma stores.

It's a shirt that's impossible to forget, not only because of the colour scheme or the Kappa logo on the sleeves, but also because it was used in the edition that marked the Giallorossi's first appearance in the continent's top competition after they gave up their old name. Last but not least, Daniele De Rossi made his debut in this shirt during Roma v Anderlecht with the number 27 on his shoulders.

However, despite the arrival of important and promising players like Zebina, Panucci and Cassano, Roma were unable to repeat the good results of the previous year, the only consolation being the Italian Super Cup won against Fiorentina. Capello's team finished second, disappointing the expectations of all those fans who dreamed of an encore. Even in the Champions League the Giallorossi will not be able to continue their journey, after the first good evidence will be the Liverpool of Gerrard to block the way of Totti and his companions.

This is not the first time that AS Roma has taken part in such an initiative, last summer it was the turn of the famous 2000-01 Scudetto shirt, the unforgettable protagonist of that glorious ride. On that occasion, too, the club created a version that was perfectly identical to the original, with the AS Roma logo embroidered and the INA ASSITALIA print, the Giallorossi's historic sponsor, on the front.
