Populous' new stadium for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics The architectural firm behind the design of the new San Siro has created the facility in which speed on ice disciplines will be played.

Only a handful of days are left before the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and for the occasion the new stadium designed by Populous has just been inaugurated. The architectural firm that should design the new San Siro has created the ice oval on which the Olympic speed disciplines will be held, called "Ice Ribbon", which will be the only structure built from scratch for the games.

Designed to accommodate up to 12,000 spectators, the stadium will see the awarding of 14 gold medals in what has been defined by its creators as "a symbol of Chinese cultural tradition that celebrates the elegance, precision, rhythm and dynamism of ice skating. Its name comes from the 22 huge concentric flakes illuminated that give just the idea of a casket of live ice engraved by the blades of the skates.

It will be the fourteenth stadium or arena designed by the Populous studio to be used during the Olympic Games, both summer and winter, and after the competitions it will be converted for public use by the citizens. A further investment by the Chinese government towards winter disciplines and, in particular, to those of speed on ice.
