What will volunteers wear during Tokyo 2020? A year in advance, the Organising Committee presented the official uniforms, produced by Asics Corporation

Just one year before at the beginning of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and well in advance the Organising Committee has already unveiled the uniforms, produced by Asics Corporation, which will be worn by over 110,000 volunteers (even during the Paralympic Games that will start three weeks later), divided between the 'Field Cast' which will act in the competition venues and in the athletes' village and the 'City Cast', which will take care of serving citizens and guests in the cities.

The 'Field Cast' outfit features a light-blue jacket with overlapping shades that reflect the core graphics used by Tokyo 2020, focusing on consistency with the local mood of places and events. The uniforms are designed to adapt to all ages, genders and nationalities, to be easily recognizable and to harmonize with the frame of the competition venues.

The 'City Cast' uniform, on the other hand, expresses even more affinity with the city of Tokyo through the surprising use of the Tokyo 2020 checkered emblem, in perfect ichimatsu style; the mix between dark blue and white will allow 'City Cast' volunteers to be easily recognizable on the streets of Tokyo by tourists, visitors and residents. The uniform has colors similar to those used for 'Field Cast' uniforms to emphasize the unity between the two different staff of volunteers.

All uniforms are produced using recycled polyester and plant material. One of the main point is certainly "unity in diversity": uniforms adopt a unisex design that will allow employees and volunteers of all ages, sizes and physical abilities to wear them comfortably.

The kit is completed with complementary items: trousers, hats, bags, jackets, shoes and socks. The trousers, shoes and socks for the 'Field Cast' are of an identical design; to make them more comfortable in the hot season, the pants are made of flexible and breathable material that incorporates a mesh fabric around the waist area. The lower sections of the trousers are removable, allowing them to be worn as shorts when temperatures are high. Reflecting Tokyo 2020's focus on sustainability, the shoes were colored using a special dyeing process that uses a minimal amount of water.
